Robert (Chef Rob) Hoffman

Pendleton

June 22, 1958 – May 20 – 2018

Rob was born in Coeur d’Alene Idaho.  He grew up hunting and fishing and learned how to cook wild game by both his mother and father.  At a very early age of seven he became interested in cooking.  His first adventure was to make donuts, when his Dad and he bit into them it almost broke their teeth. He attended University of Idaho and majored in Architecture but he left that field to become a self-taught Chef, he was an avid reader for recipe books that taught him many things.  Two highly trained Chef’s influenced his career and they encouraged him to follow his passion; he was so grateful to learn and work with them.  He had a natural knack for creating menu items with wild game and seafood, he seasoned them perfectly he even created his own seasonings and bbq sauces.

Chef Rob was soft-spoken, gentle and loved to teach young adults and kids how to cook.  He even had cooking classes for the community.  He loved Pendleton and the community that was supportive.  His other loves was basketball, for the last twenty eight years he would get up at five o’clock to play basketball at six in the morning, no matter what the weather was doing.  If you started talking to him about boats, motorcycles and skiing through the trees you almost couldn’t get away from him.  A lot of people knew Chef Rob because of his bib overalls-he had several designer bibs.

Chef Rob came to Pendleton in 1983 and took a chefs job at the Tapadera Motel & Restaurant, Tom Drumheller was his boss.  He packed up his belongings and rode down here on his motorcycle.  In 1985 we were able to purchase the Skyroom Restaurant at the airport and he introduced Pendleton to his famous creamy fettuccine’s and smoked prime rib and wild game.  People tell him that his huckleberry crème brule was the best, comparable to the Chef’s in France he was told.  We always talked about having a restaurant in a house but never thought it would be as magnificent as the Raley house.  We have lived and worked here for 27 years.

Rob died of glioblastoma brain cancer.  Until his death he was still gentle and kind and thought he would beat it…..he died peacefully with his mother and wife by his bedside and his Dad was with him for five days before he passed.

He is survived by his loving wife Raphael, Darrell Hoffman his Dad, Elaine Bartlett his mom & step dad Herschel Bartlett his younger brother Lyle.  Other step sisters & brothers are:  Herschel Bartlett Jr., Paul Bartlett, Theresa Bartlett, Sheri Bartlett, and Pamela Faulk

We will miss our after hour chats and the fabulous food that accompanied them. We regret that we were not able to make the journeys we spoke of, but we will be forever grateful for the friendship and memories we will cherish. Always in our thoughts until we meet again.

Chet and I are saddened that Rob left us, he was so good for you, and you guys made a good team in the restaurant business. We offer heartfelt condolences for your great loss. We love you Raphael and offer prayers for your healing. Jamie Connor was remembering Rob over lunch at Seniors telling us how Rob loved and supported basketball. His touch with cooking was extraordinary and we remember breakfast at your place then at Shenandoah Acres, how he could whip up ordinary food into a delicious repast. Love, and Peace.

Raphael,

My heart is breaking. I am so sorry to hear of Rob's passing. I have such fond memories of meeting both of you on a Starbottle ski trip, and have always enjoyed seeing you and Rob when I occasionally visit Pendleton. He was a fabulous chef and had such a kind heart, showing his love through the food he created and shared with us. You're both in my thoughts and prayers.

We are so very sorry to hear of Rob's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. One of my favorite memories of Rob is when he would have a pasta night at the Athletic Club. All of the pasta was yummy, but my favorite was the chocolate. Big hugs to you, prayers for strength.

I was so saddened to hear of Robert's passing. We grow up as neighbors in Coeur d'Alene and went to school together. I hadn't seen in him years until our 40th class reunion & asked that he join our table. It was great to get caught up on life and hear about his restaurant. I wished now my husband and I made the trip down to try it out. We might just have to make the drive to meet you Raphael. I am so so sorry for your loss.
