Elizabeth Marie Rehmel

January 15, 1960-March 3, 2017

Born January 15, 1960, in Frankfurt AM Mein, Germany, daughter of William and Ann Mertens (Luthringer), second born twin sister of Monica and sister to Becky and Jeff, mother to Jennifer Rehmel and beloved of Norm Kessler, both residents of the Pendleton area, and passed from this physical life into the realm of the Great Spirit at her home on March, 2017.

Her indomitable spirt manifested itself in multiple educational pursuits, obtaining several degrees, and a thirst for continual learning with the courage to stand up and express her strong voice and presence. Elizabeth was determined in every endeavor including making people laugh about the irony of life.

She was a faithful woman and a loving and dedicated Mother to Jennifer, teaching her to make candy for local fire fighters and reach out to the community. Elizabeth made her home open to others in keeping with her ancestor’s beliefs.

She loved animals, rescuing many and the outdoors, gardening, growing flowers and enjoying her time over the last 20 years living in Pendleton with Norman Kessler. Elizabeth was the Juvenile Court Director and led innovative judicial programs for the tribe and helped many young person’s transition through difficult times. She wrote for and won Federal grants that improved conditions and services to the youth. Most recently she was helping a national organization with logistics for foreign religious missions.

Elizabeth will be missed by her family and those who had the wonderful opportunity to know her. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to Cornerstone Community Church through Burns Mortuary of Pendleton.

I spent many hours visiting with Liz over the last 2 years. She was a kind and sweet woman. We would sit at length looking out over the rolling wheat fields that surrounded her home. She was never down even when life was throwing obstacles her way. I will miss her smile, her laughter, and our lengthy intellectual conversations. I will also miss being greeted by her three wonderful dogs when I arrived for my visits.
May you rest in peace Elizabeth.
