Dorothy A. Reese

July 9, 1927 – September 10, 2016

Dorothy A. Reese, 89, of Pendleton, Oregon, left this life to join her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the morning of September 10, 2016, after an extended illness.

Dorothy was born to Rufus A. and F. Helen Farrens on July 9, 1927,  Hood River, Oregon. She attended public school in Ione, Oregon, and graduated from Echo High School in June of 1945. She also attended the University of Oregon.

While attending high school she met the love of her life, Leon A. Reese. While Leon served our country in WWII, Dorothy finished high school and once he returned they were married on September 11, 1946, in Pendleton. They enjoyed 70 wonderful years together.

Dorothy enjoyed many interests such as golfing, gardening, hunting, fishing, cooking, keeping a busy home and being a wonderful and loving wife to Leon and mother to their four children Ryan, Sherman, Betsy and Arleta. She and Leon were partners in the family farm until they retired in 2005.

In addition, Dorothy served through her many charitable contributions in the Lutheran Church as well as involvement in Volunteer Overseas Cooperative Assistance in Eastern Europe, Umatilla County Conservation Farm of the Year in 1987, Umatilla County Cowbelles, Altrusa International, the Umatilla County Historical Society and the Oregon Angus Association.

She had a great love for family and was frequently hostess to large family gatherings that included her numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family. Breakfast was a delight anticipated by all as Dorothy often made pfannekuchen for the crowd.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Arleta and Genevieve, and brother Ordie.

Dorothy is survived by her husband Leon A. Reese; their children and spouses Ryan A. Reese (Julie), Gleneden Beach, Oregon; Sherman J. Reese (Stacy), Deer Park, Washington; Betsy R. Sharp (Daniel), Portland, Oregon; Arleta A. Thorne (Timothy), Pendleton, Oregon; thirteen grandchildren and spouses, and four great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service was held at the Echo Cemetery with Reverend Donald G. Reese officiating. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is handling arrangements.  Sign the online condolence book at

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dorothy's family at this time. We felt close to Dorothy and Leon when we occasionally saw them, usually at Lutheran gatherings, and we will miss Dorothy. We pray for God's comfort for the whole family.

So sorry about your loss. Dorothy was a wonderful person and "ranch" neighbor.
