Rufina Garcia

February 28, 1929 – April 18, 2015

Rufina Garcia Arvizu was born to Magdaleno Garcia and Maria Arvizu on February 28, 1929, in Elzoyatal, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, a remote mountain valley being settled by her family. From childhood she participated with her mother and Tio Pedro Arvizu in healing the ill and dying through prayer and their traditional knowledge of local plants, herbs, and teas. In Mexico she was known as a miracle worker. She was always attentive to the needs of strangers, travelers and the outcast – especially that they be fed.

Growing up in Elzoyatal, Rufina developed her love for God as an active proponent of the Sunday Devotions and daily Rosaries which were observed as a community, in Latin, and led by Rufina's Tio Pedro, Tia Trine, and her mother and father, Maria and Magdaleno. This community of prayer included Tomas Hernandez who would later become Rufina's husband. Holy Mass and Holy Communion were rare occurrences as there wasn't a priest within a day's travel.

Rufina fondly recalled how as a teenager, she would walk as a pilgrim to Santuario de Atotonilco, in the Mexican State of Guanajuato, for prayers, fasting, meditations and religious exercises.

Rufina married Tomas Hernandez and was devoted to him her entire life. It was her wish to be with him, always. Raising their young family in Elzoyatal, she and their children would cook on an open fire and take food to Tomas in his fields or wherever he was working. She was always cooking.

Rufina believed in education and striving to better their life, which is why the family moved to Mexico City, where Tomas could work for pay and their children might have more opportunity. While in Mexico City they attended Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and other world-famous shrines.

The last twenty-five years of Rufina's life have been spent in Pendleton, where she has regularly attended simultaneously, St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Mission and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pendleton. For her fiftieth wedding anniversary she made a pilgrimage to the Schoenstatt Shrine in Madison, Wisconsin, by train with her husband, family, and church members, where a Mass was held to reaffirm their marriage.

Wherever she wound up, she overcame adversity, bloomed, and was a valued member of the community. Rufina loved music and had an angelic voice. She was always singing. She loved flowers. Going to Mass and Adoration and praying the rosary were her favorite activities. She always prayed for her family and for all those in need, especially her priests and deacons.

She enjoyed going to her favorite restaurant, El Charrito, where she could be surrounded by family and friends.

Father Mike, Father Kumar, and Deacon Omar were God's instruments in Rufina's peaceful Christian death. She thanked them and blessed them before she passed away.

Rufina was happy by nature and was happiest when all of her children and their families were with her. She passed away peacefully on April 18, 2015, at home with Tomas and her children present at her side.

She is survived by her husband, Tomas Hernandez; children: Nora Hernandez, Jose (& Mary Ann) Hernandez, Bibiana (& Mike) Montchalin, Angelina Hernandez (& Martin Molina), Antonia Hernandez, Victor (& Carol Lee) Hernandez, Gina Hernandez (& Ramon Garcia), and Diego (& Tasha) Hernandez; twenty-four grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces; brothers: Inocensio Garcia, Placido Garcia, Berto Garcia, and sisters: Cleotilde Garcia, Brijida Garcia, Sara Garcia.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Arvizu; and father, Magdaleno Garcia; her brother Benedicto Garcia and her sisters Rosa Garcia and Guadalupe Garcia.

In her memory, Rufina would appreciate a Mass and your prayers.
