James William Smith "Ponca Bill"

James William Smith (Bill – Smitty) - a resident of Adams, Oregon, passed away June 20, 2013, at his home.  He was 81 years old.

He was born January 4, 1932 to Mae Blanch and Raymond L. Smith.  He was born into the Ponca Tribe on the Reservation in Niobrara, Nebraska.  He attended a Catholic School as a boy on the Ponca Indian Reservation.  He then attended schooling in Sioux City, Iowa, and later obtained his GED through the Military.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict and was later honorably discharged from the Army.  On November 12, 1955, he married Mary Ann Miller in Longview, Washington.  The couple lived in Longview, WA, and Eugene, OR, before moving to Pendleton, OR, in 1974 and ultimately settling in Adams, Oregon.  He was a resident of Umatilla County for 39 years.  Bill was employed by General Tires where he was a Commercial Tire Salesman for Tires Inc., and later became the manager of General Tires from 1974 – 1979, where he took several trade classes.  He also had drove Log Truck.  Bill was a Christian and a member of the Church of God Fellowship.  He was a past member of the Elks Lodge as well as the Eagles Lodge.  He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and taking photos.  He enjoyed jewelry making as well as restoring classic older cars and trucks.  He was very musically inclined, he loved any music and enjoyed singing and playing guitar.

Bill is survived by his wife Mary Ann Smith of Adams, OR, a son Rick E. Smith of Vancouver, WA, a daughter Sheryll A. Morris of Echo, OR, several nieces and nephews, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, as well as many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mae Blanch and Raymond L. Smith, a brother Ray L. Smith of Niobrara, NE, two sisters, Mary Lou Sowell of California and Dorla Schultz of Michigan, and a daughter, Debbie M. Smith-Collins of Pendleton, Oregon.
