John Patrick Kopetski was born in Pendleton, Oregon on July 11, 1953 and died at his home on November 1, 2012. He attended St. Joseph’s Academy and graduated from Pendleton High School in the class of 1971.  He worked many jobs as a youth.  He worked as a gas jockey at a gas station, at the Tapadera as a bus boy, and at the US Forest Service as a watch tower guard.

John attended Blue Mountain Community College and Whitman College. On June 30, 1984 he married Lisa Daboling in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pendleton.  They shared 28 years together.  He worked for Union Pacific Railroad, Prudential, Trusttime, and finally settled into a career as a financial consultant for Smith Barney.  His office became D.A. Davidson and John was named Vice President.  He recently achieved his CWS Capstone Certification through D.A. Davidson in October of this year, making him a very proud Certified Wealth Strategist.

John’s love for Oregon drove him to volunteer in many programs statewide.    He was a proud sponsor of the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo in Joseph, Oregon, and he was in charge of the Queens and Courts run-ins. He was a dedicated volunteer of the Lions Club, Knights of Pythias, and the Pendleton Animal Welfare Shelter (PAWS).  John served three terms on the Blue Mountain Community College Board of Directors. He was appointed by Gov. Kulongoski to the Bottle Bill Task Force where he served as chair for nearly two years.  This was a very important appointment to him as an outdoorsman since the place he loved best, next to home, was in nature.  He then served four years as a member and chairperson of the Oregon Government Standards and Practices Commission. He was most recently appointed a member of the Oregon Medical Board in Portland, Oregon where he served as a diligent public member. He was a dedicated member of the Investigative Affairs Committee and the Administrative Affairs Committee.

John was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking with his wife and kids. He enjoyed photography, reading, and spending time with his family. John was instantly loved by everyone who met him and his selfless demeanor and fantastic sense of humor is what made him a great friend.

He was preceded in death by his father Joseph V. Kopetski. He is survived by his wife Lisa Kopetski, his mother Margaret “Marie” Kopetski, and his children, Lincoln and spouse  Leanne Kopetski of Puyallup, Washington, Lisette Kopetski of Moscow, Idaho, and Seren Kopetski of Pendleton, Oregon, his  siblings Yvonne Stredwick of Pasco, Washington, Jane and spouse Ron Flink of Cascade, Montana, Mike and spouse Frances Kopetski of Washington DC, and Dorothy and spouse Randy Svetich of Pendleton, Oregon, as well as grandchildren Jack and Ainsley Kopetski and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Vert Auditorium on Wednesday, November 7th at 1pm and will be followed by a reception in the Vert Club Room. I cannot begin to find words that can convey my deepest sorrow for your family. This is so tragic and senseless and the hole left without John will never be filled.

Working with John was a truly enjoyable adventure and one that I looked forward to taking every day I worked with him. His sense of humor, laughter and smile were infectious to say the least. John was an extremely intelligent man who was strong in his opinions and convictions. I loved that about him. No matter how busy he was, he always took time to be an ear and shoulder when I needed someone to talk to and I always cherished his advice. John and I often swapped stories about our families and I loved hearing about all of you. He was so proud of his family and loved you all deeply. I will be forever grateful to John for his friendship and for opening up the door for me to get to know all of you either personally or through his stories…especially you Lisa.
I will forever consider myself fortunate to have known John and I will always treasure your family.

With all my love,
Debi Lunceford

Two guys raised in Riverside; two guys without 2 dimes to rub together, and in an instant, one of us is gone. We can only hope it is to a better place, a place where John''s great sense of humor will shake up the establishment, and where his sense of caring for his family will continue to shine.

Lisa, Lisette, Seren---if you need anything I can help with, we''re only a shout away. Love you guys.

Lisa, Lisette and Seren,

How can we even begin to express our shock and sympathy.

John always had a ready smile and hearty laugh, I enjoyed more
financial chats with him than I can remember. But the one that I will
always remember fondly: When the market crash started a few years
back Wacovia Bank stock had dropped to .25 cents a share. I called John
and told him I wanted to buy $25,000 dollars equal to 100,000 shares. Heck if it only went to .50 cents I would double my money! He talked for nearly an hour
telling me not to do it - I let myself be persuaded. 3 days or so later the stock was at $2.54 !! I have always joked with John that he cost me a quarter of a million dollars and he would have to support me during the retirement years.

John was a good guy, a wonderful friend and his passing is a great loss to his family, friends and the community.

Lisa if we can do anything to help you now or in the future please, please just give a call.

Go with God my friend

To John''s Family,
With time, may your loss be comforted with your warm memories of a very good man.

I knew him through his work helping my aging father with his financial investments. John was not only respectful, compassionate, and wise, but he had such a precious sense of humor. He will be missed by many.

Peace be with your in this most difficult time.

Dearest Lisa and Family,
I as so, so very saddened by your loss. John is a loss for all of us that got to know him, no matter how briefly. He made everyone feel so welcome and his humor was endless. It was just at the grand opening of PAWS, that we sat and laughed at ourselves. John made you feel as if you were and old and trusted friend. I know there are not words enough to comfort you at this time, just know, you will be together again. We all will hope to join our loved ones on that Glorious Day. My love to all of you, Celia

John was our good friend and also our financial advisor. He always had a smile and a joke for us, as well as his sound advise. We will miss him terribly. It was fun to exchange past experiences, hunting trips, railroad stories and the many other things that we had in common. Our prayers are with his family.

I was very sorry to hear of the loss of John. John hired me as the Executive Director of the Oregon Government Ethics Commission (formerly known as Government Standards and Practices Commission). John was the Chair back in November of 2006 when I was hired. I was always impressed with John's passion for the issues and people before the Commission. John had great respect for the Pubic Officials before the Commission and staff of the Commission and he was well respected by all. I will always appreciate John for his help in my first year as the Director. Oregon has loss a great man, but we can all take with us the wisdom he imparted on us. Thanks to the family for making John available to me.
