Myrtle A. Valeen - a resident of Pendleton died on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at a local care facility. She was 91 years old. Viewing will be held at the LDS Church on Tuesday, December 21, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pendleton, with Burial following at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton. Sign the online guestbook at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. Myrtle was born on January 31, 1919 in Fay, Oklahoma, to Robert and Viva Bell Parker Humphreys. She was raised in Fay, and graduated from Fay High School in 1938. In 1941, while three of her brothers were overseas during WWII, she worked for three years as a welder in the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, California. After the war she came to Pilot Rock where she worked for 22 years at the Kerns Box Factory. She then worked at the Pilot Rock Lumber Company where she ran a saw. She was secretary of the Labor Union for the mill workers for several years. On March 4, 1950 she married Howard Phil Valeen in Walla Walla, Washington. The couple settled in Pendleton, Oregon, where they remained. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mrs. Valeen is survived by her brothers Dee Humphreys of Watonga, OK, and Oscar Humphreys of Fay, OK, her step-daughter Sharleen Cole, and her sister-in-law Helen Humphreys of Pilot Rock, OR. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Valeen, her parents Robert and Viva Humphreys, brothers: Virgil Humphreys, Orville Humphreys, George Humphreys and Gary Humphreys, and sisters: Ruby Umbarger, Orpha Schwartz and Claudene Humphreys.
