Clifford E. "Cliff" Bender, a resident of Pendleton, died Friday, June 4, 2010 in a Richland, Washington Hospital. He was 63 years old. A Memorial Gathering will be held at 2:00 P.M on Friday, June 11, 2010 at the Pendleton Eagles Lodge. Sign the online guestbook at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Bender was born January 11, 1947 in Pendleton. He was the son of Earle and Clara Barnes Bender. He was raised and educated in Pendleton. After high school, he enlisted into the United States Navy and served his country on board the USS Bennington during the Vietnam War. After his discharge he returned to Pendleton where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad until he became disabled. He later worked at odd jobs and remained in Pendleton. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors including fishing, hunting mushrooms, collecting arrowheads, and using his metal detector looking for coins. He enjoyed playing poker and spending time at Wildhorse Casino. He was a great cook and will be remembered as having a green thumb. He also enjoyed many sports including baseball, basketball and football. He had been a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as a life member of the North American Fishing Club. He had also been a member of the North American Hunting Club and the Commanders Club. Survivors include: his companion, Betty VanPelt of Pendleton, two children; Alekz VanPelt of Pendleton and Kristine Bender of New York, one brother Pete Bender of Ellensburg, Washington, and a sister Mary Lawrence, of Peshastin, Washington. Two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in his death by his parents and one brother.

Betty, Alekz and Kristine, On behalf of the USS Bennington Association please accept our condolences on the loss of Cliff. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this most difficult time. You will be missed my friend.... I lost touch with you when I moved from Pendleton, and then you found me again, and then we lost touch again. To the family of Cliff.... He was an awesome friend, willing to listen when needed, offered hugs, played video games to pass time.... He was an honest man, willing to help anyone at anytime, he will be missed....
