Mr. Black was born in Brashear, Missouri, on April 12, 1921, to Reed and Ella (Ross) Black.  He was the firstborn of fourteen children.  The family moved from Missouri to Colorado in 1936, where he graduated from La Porte Colorado High School.  On November 20, 1941, James Black married Donna June Brown and the couple celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary last month.

In 1947, the whole family moved from Colorado to Oregon, settling in the Athena area until 1957 when Mr. Black moved his family to Pilot Rock, OR, where he lived until his death.

Mr. Black served in the Armed Forces during World War II, for which he received many medals.  He was an avid hunter, reader and history buff.  He also spent many hours researching the genealogy of his family.  But his greatest joy came from being with his family and telling them his many, many stories of times past.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Reed and Ella Black; brothers: Marion Arthur, John Henry, Charles Pearl, and Elvin; sisters: Genevieve McCracken, Dorothy Black, Lois Darlene Black, Beulah Faye Black, Mary Lou Stacklie, and Josie Morton.

He is survived by his wife Donna at the home; sons, James M. Black & wife Sherry of Pilot Rock, OR, and Glenn R. Black of Pittsburgh, PA; daughters, Amanda Dumond & husband Ernie of Pilot Rock, OR; and Mildred Wardle & husband Jay of Burley, ID; sisters: Wavalee Faircloth of Pendleton, OR, Wanda Jones of Heppner, OR, and Ina Spencer of Pendleton, OR; eighteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
