Marlene Louise Chaney was born October 7, 1932, at Olympia, Washington, to parents Leland Lamont Layton and Louise Layton. She died Friday, May 31, 2013, at her daughter’s home in Pendleton, Oregon, at the age of 80.

Marlene lived the vast majority of her life on family property in East Olympia, Washington, and had recently been intermittently staying with her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dennis Olson, in Pendleton, Ore. She graduated from Olympia High School, received a bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University and a master’s degree in counseling from Pacific Lutheran University. She married Forris James Chaney on March 3, 1951, in Olympia, Washington.

After their graduation from college, both Forris and Marlene worked for school districts in the Puget Sound area for 30 years, first as teachers and subsequently as school counselors. Both retired from their educational careers in 1986. Afterwards, Marlene worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor and Forris worked for many years at the Thurston County Housing Authority. Forris preceeded Marlene in death in 2008.

Marlene was a member of the Lacey, Washington, Seventh-day Adventist Church. She loved cooking, entertaining, gardening, and reading, and most certainly her family including children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her daughter Linda and son-in-law Dennis Olson of

Pendleton, Oregon; son James M. Chancy and daughter-in-law Jeannette Chancy of Cypress, California; two grandchildren, Christian Olson and Krista Marksmeier, and two stepgrandchildren. She also is survived by three great-granddaughters, Annika Olson, Zoe Olson and Brea Marksmeier, and two stepgreat-granddaughters.

Please send condolences at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, Oregon, is in care of arrangements. At Marlene’s request, no funeral services will be held. A memorial celebration is being planned for family and close friends later this summer in Olympia, Wash.
