Juan M. “John” Ansotegui - a resident of Pendleton died Thursday, March 14, 2013 in Pendleton.  He was 67 years old. 

          Viewing will be held Friday, March 22nd, 2013, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Burns Mortuary in Pendleton.  A Graveside Service will be held on at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 23rd, 2013, in the Vinson Cemetery on the old Pilot Rock-Heppner Highway near Pilot Rock, Oregon, with a Celebration of Life reception to be held at 2:00 PM Saturday at the Pendleton Eagles Lodge #28.  In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John Ansotegui may be made to the Eagles Lodge Memorial Fund.           Juan was born November 5, 1945 in Guernica, Spain, (Basque area in Northern Spain) to Manuel and Anastasia Landa-Ansotegui. 

          At 18 years old he was drafted into the Spanish Army and spent tow years serving in Africa.  Afterward, Juan worked as a bartender on a Spanish cruise ship. 

          He came to the United States when he was 22 years old, not being able to speak English, and began working on the Doherty Ranch outside of Pilot Rock.  He then worked for Cunningham Sheep and became like family to the Doherty and Levy families.  He then went to work falling timber for a logging company out of Baker City.  His last employment was as a debarker-operator at Kinzua Mills in Pilot Rock.  He worked at the mill for approximately twenty-five years, retiring in January of 2012.

          He married Carolyn Erickson in 1973.  He raised a seven-year-old step-son, Robby Erickson.  The couple had three children, Johnny, Paul and Anna.  They divorced in 1986. 

          In January 1987 he married RoseEtta Jones and gained two adult daughters, Anita and Debbie.

          Juan’s (John’s) hobbies were cooking for Mario’s Basque BBQ, camping, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling.  Next, came travel to Spain for family visits. 

          He is survived by his son Johnny of Pendleton, OR, son Paul & wife Deena of Portland, OR, daughter Anna of Hermiston, OR, step-daughter Anita Taylor & husband Bill of Pendleton, Debbie Briscoe & husband Clayton of Echo, OR, grandchildren: Brittany Briscoe & fiancé Nick McFarlane of Pendleton, Bradley Stiles of Pendleton, and Kayla Andrews of Portland, OR, sisters: Maria Jesus and Rosa Mari & husband Jose (Joe) of Guernica, Spain, nephew Adolfo and niece Iraultza, also of Spain.
