Steven Duane 'Too Tall' Christiansen Pendleton November 17, 1952-March 10, 2012 Steven Duane "Too Tall" Christiansen was killed in a car accident on Saturday, March 10, 2012. Steven was born on November 17, 1952, to Melvin R. and Iris V. Dykstra Christiansen in Pendleton, Oregon. When he was 3, they moved to Elgin, Oregon, where he attended school through the fifth grade. In 1964, they moved back to Pendleton where he graduated from Pendleton High School in 1971. He attended a year at Blue Mountain Community College. He played basketball from junior high school through college and the Army. He also participated in track in high school. In August 1972 he enlisted in the Army as a tank torrent repairman. He served two tours in Germany and several different posts in America. He was discharged from the regular Army in September 1983. He then served in the National Guard in Walla Walla and Kennewick, Wash. He retired after 20 years. After the service he worked several different jobs around Pendleton. For the last 10 years he worked for Elite Taxi Cab, which he loved. He loved the opportunity to meet different people. He was well liked and respected at the cab company. He always willing to help anyone who was in need of a ride, car repair, or a place to lay their head. He loved to hunt and take pictures. He was an avid collector of aquarium fish. He always had cats and dogs around him. Steve is survived by his mother, Iris Christiansen; brother Merlyn Christiansen and wife Lana; sister Carol Fitzsimmons and husband Dave; great-nephew Timothy Fitzsimmons, who lived with him; nieces Karen Fitzsimmons of Pendleton, Roberta Smith of Kennewick, Sandie Trowbridge of Redmond, Ore., and Shari of Colorado; nephews Kevin Christiansen of Portland, Ore., Melvin Fitzsimmons of Pendleton and Kip Christiansen and Chris Hancock, both of Redmond, Ore. There were numerous great-nieces and -nephews and one great-great-niece. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Christiansen, and both sets of grandparents. Funeral services will be held at Skyview Memorial Cemetery on Friday, March 16, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. Donations can be made to the Veteran's Hospital in Portland, Ore., for returning vets from foreign wars Wounded Warrior Project through Burns Mortuary of Pendleton.
