Leonard "Chief" Cree - "Ma uut" - a resident of Pendleton died on Monday, November 30, 2009 at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton following month of illness. He was 83 years old. A Dressing Ceremony was held on Tuesday, December 1st, at 10:00 AM at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton. A Washat Service was held at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, December 1st at the Mission Longhouse. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton was in charge of arrangements. Leonard was born on September 1, 1926 on the Lower McKay Creek to Taylor and Esther Pond Cree, he was delivered at home by a midwife. He was raised in Pendleton, and attended St. Andrew's School. He later attended Chemawa Indian School in Salem. When he was 16 years old, Leonard enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served in Okinawa, Japan, and the South Pacific for four years. Following his honorable discharge from the US Navy, Leonard worked for the railroad and spent his free time riding bulls in the rodeo. He worked at a cannery, and as a farmer, but most recently he worked at Wildhorse Casino for 11 years until his official retirement in 2007. Leonard enjoyed War Dancing, farming, and fishing at Celilo. He had been affiliated with the George St. Dennis Post On January 12, 1952 he married Lucille Tias Cree at St. Andrew's Mission in Pendleton. The couple had four children. Lucille passed away in 1985. Leonard was very proud of his ancestry. His family's name originally was Kotatams, but was changed to Pond in 1930. Leonard is survived by his longtime companion Wanda Smith, his children: Mona Cree, George Raymond Cree, Esther Cree, and Robert McCoy, sister Gerry George, grandchildren; Leonard Speedis, Jacob Cree, Jerry Cree, Stacey Speedis, Elizabeth Speedis, Robert, Robin and Rodney McCoy, nephews Dr. Ron J. Pond and Marvin Burke, niece Alvina Burke Huesties, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and friends. He was preceded by his wife Lucille Cree, a daughter Debbie Cree, his brother Raymond Burke, and his parents Taylor and Esther Cree.
