Delbert was born May 12, 1931, in National City, California, to Merle & Mamie Griffin.  He graduated from Gem State Academy in Caldwell, Idaho, and attended Walla Walla University in College Place, Washington.

He married LaVonna Kruse October 21, 1951, in College Place.

In 1952 he was inducted into the Army, spending basic training in Virginia, Texas, and Washington.  The remainder of his service time was at the Letterman Army Hospital, San Francisco, California.

In 1954 he was employed at Harris Pine Mills, Pendleton, Oregon.  He filed saws and eventually went into the maintenance department as a machinist and supervisor.  When Harris Pine Mills closed in 1991, he worked at Blue Mountain Forest Products until his retirement in 1996.

He especially enjoyed working with the youth of the church in the Pathfinder Club.  He spent well over 40 years as a counselor, teacher and leader.  He had many hobbies, rock collecting, cutting & polishing being one of his favorites.  He liked trading rocks he collected for rocks from around the world.  He enjoyed camping with family & friends, either in the mountains or at the beach.  His interests ranged from antiques, restoring old cars, digging for old bottles, building things from iron and stamp collecting.  He often said that if you have two of an item, you have a collection.  He liked to share his interests with others.

His love for his family, church and his sense of humor remained with him to the end.

He is survived by wife, LaVonna, sons: Delbert E. Dear Griffin Family

You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. There are no words just know we are here for you guys as brothers and sisters in Christ.

My brother Mario was a pathfinder for many years and I was a pathfinder briefly as well. Many of my friends and family members have also been in pathfinder's as well. We have all been touched by Mr. Griffin's kindness and attention to youth and children.

With Love,
Susie Arroyo

It is with great sorrow that I lost my mentor and a great friend in Delbert. I will miss his smile, his knowledge and the spirit of sharing all he knew about teaching me the art of lapidary. I will miss him sharing his collection and all the new specimens and of course the many hours of conversations about petrified wood.
Our hearts are with you LaVonna, and all your family in this time of loss, Delbert leaves a legacy and will be greatly missed

Again, I want to send my thoughts and prayers. Delbert was always such a positive person. I loved reading about his life's story. I understand the memorial is supposed to be the 22nd of August, but I didn't get the details. Could you please send me that information so I can pass it on to our fellow rockhounds? Thanks.
