Vernon L. Ford

January 6, 1933 – August 17, 2014

Vernon Louis Ford – age 81, died August 17, 2014, at Kadlec Hospital in Richland, WA, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by two sons, Vernon Jr. of Pilot Rock, and Steven of Soap Lake.  Four special grandchildren, Sarah, Caleb, Vance Schultz of Pendleton, and Shelly Schultz of Eugene, OR.  Plus thirteen other grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.  Sister Dorothy Sexton of Napa, ID, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his wife Mary of 52 years, two daughters, Vicki Morris and Debra Ford, four brothers and two sisters, and his parents Albert & Margaret Ford.  Vernon was born in Coeur d’Alene, ID.  He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army.

Vernon was a devoted family man.  He and Mary took many family members and their children into their home.  Vernon & Mary were the rock of the family, as their door was always open to everyone.

He liked making furniture for his family as well as metal fabrication.  His favorite pastime was working in his shop, building something out of nothing and gardening.  He was always taking his children and grandchildren to the mountains for Easter or hunting mushrooms.  He loved nature and felt most at peace camping, fishing, and surrounded by animals and family.  Above all he loved his family.  He spent most of his time teaching his children and grandchildren the tools of knowledge that they would need later in life.  He loved telling stories of his family life growing up.

Vern drove truck and hauled gravel for Blue Mountain Asphalt for many years.  He enjoyed driving truck so much that he didn’t retire until he was 77 years old.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 23, 2014, at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton Chapel, followed by interment at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton.

Vernon is the definition of a great man ... he served his country, worked his entire life to provide for his family, lead by example and loved his family and took care of them. He and his wife Mary always made us feel welcome when we'd stop in to visit and so you'd just want to stay awhile.
]
He also helped raise my nieces and nephews, Caleb, Vance, Sarah and Shelly ... all outstanding kids with big hearts ... so he and Mary can rest in peace knowing 'job well done'.

I had the opportunity to work with Vernon from 1996 to 2004 when I retired from Blue Mt. Asphalt. He was a devoted person and never spoke of any anger or discontent. The world would by a much better place to live in, if they follow his personality.
