Rita R. Safford

Sept. 27, 1931 – July 7, 2014

Rita R, Safford, 82, of Pendleton, Oregon went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July the 7th, 2014, at Oregon Health & Science University, following a sudden and brief illness. Rita was born on September 27, 1931, in Walla Walla, Washington and was an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. She grew up near Pendleton, on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, attending St. Andrew’s School as well as St. Joseph’s Academy.

She married the love of her life, Wayne “Blackie” Safford in Reno, Nevada. They raised their two daughters, Julie and Susan, for a brief time in Oregon City, then moved to Pendleton. Her husband passed away in 1996 and she never remarried.

Rita was a long time member of Pendleton First Assembly of God Church, attending faithfully, along with her entire family. She served for many years there as a greeter, welcoming people as they entered the church.

She had a driving passion to visit the sick and elderly in nursing homes and also in their own homes. The sincerest desire of her heart was for everyone to know just how much God loves them. She never missed an opportunity to ask someone if they knew Jesus and if they did not, she would always find a way to show them their need for Him in their life.

In more recent years, she was very instrumental in the founding of the Mission Assembly of God Church, where she was an active member until the time of her death. She served as an Elder Advisor and in many other areas as needed. In the words of her pastor, Rita “was everything to this church.”

She served a short term on the Health Commission for Yellowhawk Tribal Health Center. She also enjoyed the years she volunteered at the Salvation Army Thrift Store and meal site.

Next to her faith, her family was most important in her life.

Rita is survived by her daughters Julie (Mike) Jones, Susan (Rob) Johnson, all of Pendleton;

Sister Lora Lee (J.C.) Penney, Pendleton; three granddaughters: Brandy (Shawn) Bird and Holly (Josh) Cyganik, both of Pendleton, and Rachel Ellner of North Hollywood, CA; five great grandchildren: Sierra Bryant, Glae Bird, Parker Smith, Jayden Bryant, and Carson Cyganik, all of Pendleton.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne “Blackie” Safford; her parents, William and Maude LaCourse; twin sister, Nita Johnson; sister, Florence Carden; brothers, Delbert “Del” and Eldon “Boots” LaCourse.

A service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mission Assembly of God Church. Those who wish, may make contributions, on Rita’s behalf, to The American Indian Bible College at: 10020 N. 15th Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85021.  A public viewing will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

To the Family and Friends of Rita:
I have never met a more beautiful woman, inside and out, nor a more wonderful Christian than Rita Safford. She was the most kind, giving, loving person I have ever had the privilege of calling my friend. Her strong Christian faith and strength gave me so much hope! She was a prayer warrior, always willing to pray for anyone if asked. I admired her greatly and will miss her always. Rita was one of a kind. The world has lost a wonderful lady and a true disciple of Jesus Christ. I look forward to seeing her again in heaven. God Bless you all.

All I can say is many years ago, My mom passed away at 49 with cancer. She left two teenage sisters for Gary and I to take care of. My sister Teri had a bad drinking problem. We started AA through the first Assembly in Pendleton with Vern Kube ... We met Rita and Blackie. They made such a impact on our life. She was a special lady and so happy we can say we knew her. God bless...
