Lucille Mae Quaempts

May 7, 1922 – June 11, 2014

Lucille Mae Quaempts was born May 7, 1922, on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning, Mt, and died of natural causes on June 11, 2014, at Heritage Cottage in Milton-Freewater, OR. During her childhood she was one of many Native children who lived in Bureau of Indian Affairs boarding schools hoping for a chance at a better education. She graduated from Chemawa Indian School where she met and then married Elias Quaempts who came from the Umatilla Indian Reservation. They settled on the reservation at St. Andrews Mission and had five children before moving to Pilot Rock, OR, where she lived for 46 years before moving into assisted living homes for the last ten years of her life.

Lucille was sociable, friendly, and loved to talk (hence her nickname “Talkie”). She was a wonderful homemaker, very skilled at sewing, and enjoyed crocheting and cooking. People may remember her and her best friend, Susie Moore, setting up one of the first frybread stands on the levee at the Pendleton Round-Up. Those two also loved to drive all over to shop second-hand stores and stop at every garage sale they could find!

Surviving Lucille are her children Donna Green, Robert (LaDonna) Quaempts, Iona (Chris) Hansel, William (Stephanie) Quaempts, and Steven Quaempts. She had 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, including three great-grandchildren expected to arrive in the next few months. Lucille was very proud of her children’s successes in life and especially proud of her grandchildren’s achievements.

Lucille believed that one day she would be reunited with her husband, Eli, who she greatly missed since his death in 2001. It is interesting to note that she died on June 11, which is what would have been their 73rd wedding anniversary. The family would like to thank the medical staff at Yellowhawk Clinic, and the caregivers at Hilltop Care Home and Heritage Cottage for their affection and care of our mother. A special thank you to Virginia Lucero for her relationship with Lucille.

Rosary service at Burns Mortuary in Pendleton, OR, on Sunday, June 15th at 5:30 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Andrews Mission on Monday, June 16th at 10:00 am with lunch to follow in the adjacent Kateri Hall.  Sign the online condolence book at www.burnsmortuary.com   Burns Mortuary of Pendleton handled arrangements.  Memorial contributions in her memory can be made to Cay-Uma-Wa Head Start, PO Box 638, Pendleton, OR 97801.

To my beautiful family...
I'm so sorry to hear about Auntie passing. I just saw her at Christmas when I was home from Texas. I went and gave her a hug and told her hello. I don't think she knew me but I didn't care. We still had a good little visit. It was always so good seeing her. I'm happy she is with Uncle Eli again and can just hear them laughing. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys. Love y'all very much.

Have not seen Talkie for several years, but my memory of her go back 50+ years. What a fine and funny lady she was and what a pair she and Susie were when together. Never a moment without laughter and good cheer.

May peace and comfort soon fill the vacant place left in the hearts of her loved ones.

Bill and family: I was so sorry to read about your Mother's passing. I remember you talking fondly about her. Losing a Mom is hard. My Mother died in 1995 and there is not a day she doesn't cross my mind--and my heart. My thoughts are with all of you. Please accept my deepest sympathies. Carole

I am sorry at the loss of your Grandmother, and I hope that this Scripture comforts you. "Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted; He saves those who are crushed in spirit." Psalms 34:18 (jw.org)
