Alvin R. Kempel of Pilot Rock, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014 at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Washington with his family at his bedside.

Al was born in Lisbon, North Dakota on January 7, 1934 to Fred and Regina (Krosting) Kempel.  His early childhood was spent in the North Dakota, Minnesota and Illinois.  He graduated from high school in Lisbon in 1951 and joined the U.S. Navy.  After an honorable discharge he returned to North Dakota and started farming with his dad.

In 1969 his dad retired from farming and Al moved to Pilot Rock, Oregon where he had two uncles.  He loved Oregon and this is where he spent the rest of his life.

He owned and operated to Birch Creek Tavern in Pilot Rock for several years where he met many friends and has kept these friends throughout the years.  He also worked for U.S. Gypsum, Mentzer and Elliott Logging and Pendleton Grain Growers, where he retired from.

In 1979 he married the love of his life Marjean Rueppel in Carson City, Nevada and they had almost 35 years of life together.

Al is survived at home by his wife, Marjean, Daughter Elizabeth (Aric) Futter, step-daughter Dawny (Don) McCullough, all of Pendleton, Oregon.  Sister Joyce (Jerome) Kapaun of Mapleton, North Dakota, brother Edwin (Kathy) Kempel of Mandan, North Dakota, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Regina Kempel, infant brother Clarence and step-son Nick Rueppel.

So sorry to hear of Alvin's passing. He was such a wonderful happy person. He could make anyone he met feel like he had known them his entire life. He was a very special person. We have all lost a great friend.

So sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed "Owl". He used to tease David and I, when he worked at the elevator, even before we were married. Then I got to be his bartender, and enjoyed all his stories. Dawny, you were the best babysitter ever! Prayers for comfort. He will be dearly missed. <3
