Leland D. Owens – a resident of Pendleton passed away Wednesday January 22, 2014, at his home.  He was 84 years old. 

 

A Graveside Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 24, 2014, in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Stanfield, Oregon.  Sign the online condolence book at www.burnsmortuary.com   Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. 

 

Leland was born October 30, 1929, to Walter and Agnes (Duncan) Owens in St. Edward, Nebraska.  He was raised on the family farm near Newman Grove, Nebraska.  He attended schooling in Newman Grove and worked the farm.  Leland joined the U.S. Air Force 1951, he served his country in the Korean War.  On April 24, 1954, he married Alma L. Thompson in Hermiston, Oregon.  She moved to California and lived on the Air Force Base when Leland came home from serving overseas, until he received his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force in 1959.  The couple made their home in Pendleton, Oregon, where they raised their four children.  Leland worked as a professional Truck Driver for many years. When he retired, his last job had been driving truck on a ranch.  He always enjoyed collecting antiques; combing over flea markets and antique stores.  He especially enjoyed antique toy tractors.  He also liked traveling to visit his family.  Leland moved into the Sun Ridge Retirement Community several years ago, where he enjoyed participating in the many activities, crafts and games.  He was a member of the Pendleton Baptist Church.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife Alma in 2001, his son Leland W. in 2007, his parents, one brother and three sisters.  He is survived by his children: Joseph A. Owens of Bend, OR, Carolyn K. Drake of Pendleton, and Beverly A. Marker of Pendleton, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

We were saddened to hear of Mr. Owen's death. Though we know we cannot keep our loved ones with us all the time, it is nevertheless an emotional shock not to have them near. We know he was special to your hearts.
