Vera Lee Peterson - a longtime Pendleton resident, passed away on Sunday morning, August 21st, 2011, at a Pendleton care home. She was 86 years old. Memorial services will be conducted on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 10:00 A.M., at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Pendleton, with a luncheon to follow at noon, at the Eagles Lodge. Sign the online guestbook at www.burnsmortuary.com Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. Vera Lee was born on October 11, 1924 in Pendleton, to Joseph and Verna Taylor Fortier. She was raised and educated in Pendleton, graduating from Pendleton High School with the class of 1942. She met Milford C. Peterson when he was in the military and stationed in Pendleton, and the couple fell in love. Vera Lee and Milford Peterson were married on January 16, 1943, in Richmond Virginia. The couple had lived very briefly in Richmond, VA, Philadelphia, PA, Washington D.C., and Fort Sumner, MN. After Mr. Peterson was honorably discharged, the couple made their home in Pendleton, where they raised their four children. Vera had worked in retail sales and also as a playground supervisor at West Hills Elementary School, where she worked for 12 years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Pendleton. She was a past queen of the Job's Daughters. Vera loved the outdoors her pastimes included hunting and fishing, as well as rose gardening. Her hobbies included beading, sewing, painting and researching family genealogy. She also enjoyed collecting hair combs and Christmas ornaments. Vera is survived by her husband of 68 years Milford C. Peterson, her children Milford C. "Pete" Peterson, Jr., Stephen C. Peterson, and Tiah M. Peterson, all of Pendleton, her sister Janet Wood of Forest Grove, OR, as well as six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph & Verna Fortier, and a daughter Sandra Dee Peterson.

Pete, Mel and the rest of your family. I was sorry to hear of Vera Lee's passing. I've got so many great memories of you guys when we lived next door, even the one where Pete beat the crap out of me. My wife, Carol, and I have passed through Pendleton, from time to time. Pete, give me your address. like to stop by on next trip,whenever that is. Once again my condolences to you Mel, Pete, Steven and Tiah

So sorry to hear of the passing of Vera Lee, I remember her when she worked at the Bon Marche, always very friendly to the customers, she also rented a basement apartment to a very dear friend of our family Edith Montgomery, also passed away. Sorry I won't be able to attend the memorial or luncheon as I am going to be out of town. God bless and may He give Vera Lee eternal peace.
