Sheridan K. Sweek Zita of Pendleton died Thursday, March 11, 2010, after a courageous nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 45 years young. Born October 30, 1964, to Clayton and Evelyn Sweek in Heppner, Oregon, Sheridan grew up with her three brothers Mike, Dana, and Curtis. In 1982 she graduated from Heppner High School and went on to earn a Dental Assistant Certificate from Blue Mountain Community College in 1983 and a Medical Records Degree from Central Oregon Community College in 1986. She married Rich Zita in Heppner in 1987 and for the past 23 years resided in the Pendleton area, where she raised and loved her two sons, Cory and Nicolas. While nurturing her sons through boyhood, Sheridan found her passion for teaching children. She returned to college at Eastern Oregon University and graduated in 2001 with her BS and later received her MA in Education. In the fall of 2001 she joined the Echo School District, where she proudly worked until her declining health kept her from the students and classroom she so enjoyed. Her other loves in life included spending time with her family, both indoors and out, cooking healthy meals, and hiking and camping in national parks, especially near the wonders of waterfalls. She was an avid gardener who loved sharing her knowledge of plants and garden design with others. Sheridan was preceded in death by her father, Clayton Sweek. She will be deeply missed by her mother, Evelyn Sweek of Heppner; husband, Rich Zita, and sons, Cory and Nicolas, all of Pendleton; brothers Mike Sweek of Heppner, Dana Sweek of Hood River, and Curtis Sweek of Hermiston; and many relatives and in-laws, as well as numerous friends, co-workers, and students. A memorial service will be held March 20th at 1:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Pendleton, located at the corner of SE 2nd and Dorion. In lieu of cards or flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary's Cancer Clinic in Walla Walla or the Oregon Cancer Society, designating pancreatic cancer research, and may be sent in care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, PO Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801. Sheridan and I grew up across the street from each other and we were roommates in Pendleton. We had all kinds of fun as kids, sleep overs and pestering all her brothers, well they pestered us more actually. Until I started dating Curtis in high school: Mike, Dana and Curtis were very protective of their little sister. Evelyn used to make the BEST homemade donuts, my memory is that they melted in our mouths much even better than Krispy Kreme. We were only allowed to have one each they were so much work for Evelyn I think that was the reason The last time I saw Sheridan was in September. I'll never forget the look in her eyes when we said good bye. She had the most beauitufl eyes. I felt it would be the last time I saw her in this lifetime. Her love for her job and family was so strong. I have always been in awe of how she attended school while raising two boys and keeping a perfect home for her family. My heart is breaking for her family right now but I know she is in heaven with her friend Darcy and her Dad Clayton. They will be happy to have her with them. Rich, Cory and Nicolas, you are in our thoughts and can only imagine how difficult this is for you. Love you Sheridan, see you another time!

My darling Sheridan ~ there are not enough words in this world to express my sorrow at you having to leave this big blue marble. Thank you for choosing me to be your friend, for sharing with me your joys, fears and sorrows throughout life and through your illness. And thank you for all the awesome memories, many that still make me laugh outloud. You taught me the true meaning of the words strength, courage, devotion and friendship. I learned so much from you. You are not "was" to me, you are and will forever be. Take care of Seth for me until I see you both again. I am sure he would love to hear to tales of a young wizard named Harry. I will look for you in my dreams. Love you. Me

I miss you Sheridan. As I told you a thousand times throughout your illness, I wish I could take this away from you. I am going to start my garden soon. I don't know that it will ever look like yours but I will try. I won't forget what you told me should I get frustrated and run to the yellow pages to find a gardner. "The joy is in creating it yourself". Yes, there is that...and having a good rototiller helps too. Love you.

Oh Sheridan you were one of the most beautiful people - inside and out - I have ever had the fortune of knowing. The loss of your light in this world is more vast than I could ever put into words. You will be missed so very, very much. All I can do is hold tight to the memories and look forward to shopping with you again. I am sure the shops where we will meet again have much better deals! May God bless you and all of those whose lives were changed by you.

You were a wonderful teacher and you made everyone feel welcome who subbed in Echo. Always willing to offer help, a friendly welcome to the class, introduced yourself and made sure we all knew the other teachers in the building as well. Your thoughtfulness and kindness will be very missed.

Sheridan, I remember when you were visiting down in L.A and you, Michele, Karen and I went to the beach and we were sitting there talking about how cool it would be if a whale swam by, and looking up we see 2 beautiful whales swim right past us! It was amazing and we were so excited! Its a memory I like to think about! God Bless You! My thoughts and prayers go out to Sheridan's family and friends. I know she will be watching over all of you! May you find peace in your memories of that beautiful spirit!

I will forever remember Sheridan as one of my sister Darcys dearest friends. Growing up in a small town it seems we have all known each other forever..and know way too much about each other from childhood. What I remeber the most about her as an adult is how very much she loved her boys. I know she was a wonderfull mother, wife and daughter, sister. Please know that I will forever keep her in my heart...and I am hoping that she and Darcy are in a better place free from the pain they suffered here on earth. Hang in there....

Knowing you has been a veru great treat, it has been wonderful to have had you in my life. I wish we could have been closer --geographically -- so we could have had more time together. You have left a very rich heritage behind with your two wonderful sons and all the memories they and their Dad will have of you for the rest of their lives. Rest in Peace and the love we will continue to send you.

Rich, Cory and Nicholas, I'm so sorry for your loss. Sheridan was beautiful, classy and sweet...even through the bad, she was a lady. I consider myself blessed to have been a part of her care...I will continue to pray for all of you each day. My family and I would have liked to have been there today, but as Im sure you may have already heard, we had our own family tragedy this week and will be with my brother...will be thinking of you. Hey Sheridan...I cant believe it has been almost a year since you went on your new journey. I can't begin to tell you how much I have missed you. I have tried to be strong, just like you, but all I have done is put off the necessary grieving. I miss you so much and would love to sit and have a talk with you again, making each other laugh even through our tears. We became pretty good at that when you were sick. As I told you so many times before you left, I love you and that has not changed. Blessings to you my dear girl.
