Wesley "Wes" M. Kannard, a longtime resident of Pendleton, died Friday, January 22, 2010 in the Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston. He was 92 years old. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 29, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the Olney Cemetery, Pendleton, Oregon. Viewing will be Thursday, January 28th between the hours of 12:00 noon and 5:00 P.M. in the Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, Pendleton, Oregon. Memorials in his memory may be directed to a charity of ones choice and may be sent care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O. Box 489, Pendleton, Oregon 97801. Sign the register book or send condolences at www.burnsmortuary.com Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Kannard was born March 21, 1917 in Merna, Wyoming. He was the son of William and Lula Marsh Kannard. He was raised in Alva, Oklahoma, and later moved to La Grande, Oregon where he graduated from high school. After high school he worked at a gas station in La Grande until he was drafted into the Army Air Force during WWII. He was a Tech Sgt. and a gunnery instructor and served his country in Germany. He received the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Battle Stars as well as a Service Stripe, among others. After his honorable discharge he returned to La Grande, and then later moved to the Pendleton area. He worked at a gas station here for a brief time before he began working as a carpenter. He married Alice Vickere in 1955. He had worked early on for McCormick Construction as well as for Eastern Oregon Construction Company before he began working as an independent contractor. He continued working as a contractor until he retired in 1990. He greatly enjoyed his wood shop and making things out of wood. He was a member of the Pendleton Free Methodist Church as well as the NRA and the VFW. Survivors include his two sons, Forest Kannard of Pendleton and Bill Kannard of Stanfield, Oregon, one brother, Ike Kannard of La Grande and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Alice, his parents, one brother and one sister.
