Saturday, October 12, 2013, Francis Joseph Ficenec died after a year-long battle with cancer.  He originally fought lymphoma in the early 1990’s, and had been healthy for the following 20 years.  Then last year Francis was diagnosed with cancer again, this time in his bone marrow.  While he was in remission over the summer, the cancer came back this fall and his decline thereafter was rapid.  At his death he was 79 years of age.

Francis was born on September 4, 1934 near Milnor, a small farm-town in Sargent County, North Dakota where his family lived, and began running his family’s farm in 1955 upon his father’s death.  He married Veronica Marion Ciesynski of Cayuga, North Dakota on June 27, 1964 in Geneseo, North Dakota.  During his time in North Dakota Francis was a member of the Knights of Columbus, an active member of the parish at St. Arnold’s Church, and an avid hunter.

After Francis had run the family farm for over 20 years, in 1977 he moved his family to Pendleton, Oregon looking for a new adventure.  For several years he worked as a ‘jack-of-all-trades’, followed by a career as a mechanic for the Pendleton Grain Growers.  In 1985 Francis moved his family to his current home in Pilot Rock, Oregon, and eventually retired from the Grain Growers in 1997.

Francis’ passion was old cars.  He restored several classic cars, with his first being a 1960 Studebaker Hawk.  All-in-all, he restored 10 different Studebakers.  His ’42 President Coupe was one of only a small handful left in existence.  Francis loved to travel around the northwest with friends to car shows and swap meets, often pulling a trailer home with spare parts.

Francis is survived by his wife, Veronica, two sons, George and Anthony, one daughter, Mary Peck, as well as five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  One brother and five sisters also survive: Mary Olson of Milnor, ND; Anna Torgerson of Lake Geneva, WI; Helen Beyer of Wahpeton, ND; Dorothy Gilk of Salmon, ID; Joseph Ficenec of Delamere, ND and Alice Reiff of Kent, MN.

There will be a Rosary Service Friday, October 18th at 7:00pm at Burns Mortuary in Pendleton.  Funeral services will be held at St. Helens Catholic Church in Pilot Rock, Saturday, October 19th at 10:00am.  He will be laid to rest in Pilot Rock Cemetery.  Send condolences at www.burnsmortuary.com   Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is handling arrangements.
