Violet “Vi” Fern Schimke, 98, of Pendleton Oregon passed away on May 22 at Providence hospital in Portland Oregon.
Vi and her twin sister Vivian were born to William and Olive Dietz in Harvey North Dakota on July 07, 1926. The twin’s older brother and sister, George and Harriet wanted to tell their friends that the doctor had called and told them that Olive had delivered twins. William would not let them tell others until he had confirmed the information with the hospital because he thought that the doctor was just pulling a prank on them. The twins must have been somewhat mischievous because mom said that on occasion they were referred to as “sin twisters“ instead of “twin sisters”.
Vi and Harry eloped and got married in Stockton California November 06, 1946 witnessed by her brother George and his wife Phyllis Dietz. Vi said that Harry being the prankster that he was, got a baby doll and wrapped it up in a blanket and they went to tell Vi’s parents that they had gotten married. Vi’s parents were relieved to find out that it was just a baby doll. Vi and Harry moved to Pendleton in the early 50s where they both lived until their passing.
Vi was adventurous and would try anything new on a dare, such as parasailing on her 90th birthday. Vi loved games, onion and tomato sandwiches. Making popcorn on Saturday night was one of her traditions. Vi enjoyed making bread for people.
Vi was predeceased by Harry Schimke her loving husband of 52 years in 1998 and Lew Schimke her oldest son in 2008. Vi is survived by her sister Jeanne Morris, Kim Schimke (Patti Schimke), Daughter in law Jodie Schimke, 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces, and nephews.
