Richard Armstrong was born in Berlin, Germany to Richard H. and Gracie M. Armstrong...Americans who met and married while serving overseas. Richard's parents were transferred back to the states in 1962, sadly depriving baby Ricky of the opportunity to become fluent in German.
Richard graduated from Cibola High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico - Class of 1978 - Passed "Go" - Collected $200 and joined the U.S. Army. Some people will do ANYTHING for new clothes!
After several years wearing Army green and maintaining helicopters, he made the switch for Air Force blue, maintaining and repairing fuel systems on the F-15.
Ricky was very proud to have attained the rank of Technical Sergeant - with "Outstanding' written large on his efficiency reports. He was medically retired in 2007.
It was the Masonic Funeral Service at his father's funeral that caused Rick to ask for a petition. He became a member of Gresham Lodge, ancient free and accepted Masons in 1997. About a year later, he joined the Order of the Eastern Star at Gresham Chapter #117. He was young. He was a guy (duh)...and he came back! So, we put him right to work. He was worthy patron before he know what hit him; and spent a lot of time bopping back and forth - Associate Patron, Worthy Patron, Associate Patron - six years worth! Mama and I dubbed him the "Ping Pong Patron".
Along the way, he met the love of his life, E'Laine Hall. In his own words, "Married her before she came to her senses."
When our mother was elected grand secretary of Oregon Eastern Star, Rick and E'Laine were her Grand Escorts.
E'Laine died in 2019 and suddenly the open, happy smile that so many of us remember Ricky for was sadly...missing.
Richard is survived by his elder sister, Deborah, who is completely shocked to find herself in the position of, "last one standing".
I love you, baby brudda - and I will miss you all the days of my life.
