Bobby Carl Smith Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Pendleton, Oregon on February 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and three children. Born on May 25, 1943, in Otto Ridge, Missouri, Bobby's life was a testament to calloused hands and a tender heart, with an unwavering commitment to his family.
Bobby was born the youngest boy in a humble family of eleven children. At the age of seven, he and his family relocated from Missouri to Reith, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. He attended Pendleton High School, where he graduated in 1962.
In 1964, Bobby married the love of his life, Caroline Smith. Together, they embarked on a journey filled with love, devotion, and companionship. Their marriage, which spanned over six decades, was celebrated with joy and nostalgia in December 2024, marking their 60th wedding anniversary.
Bobby's professional life was marked by his significant contributions to the field of construction. From 1964 to 1974, he performed civic construction work in California, showcasing his skills and dedication. He worked a variety of construction related roles upon returning to Pendleton, eventually retiring from a role as a paint supervisor at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bobby had a deep-seated love for the outdoors. An avid gardener, he could spend countless hours nurturing his plants and feeding birds and local wildlife. His passion for nature extended to fishing, hunting, and exploring the mountains, where he found solace and joy. Bobby's hands were never idle; he found immense satisfaction in working with them, whether it was constructing something new or tending to his garden. At the end of a day's hard work, he cherished the simple pleasure of sharing a cold beer, reflecting on the day's accomplishments.
Bobby was not only a dedicated family man but also a contributor to the local community. In 1984, he was honored to serve as the President of the local Eagles chapter. His exemplary service and commitment were recognized when he was named Man of the Year for 1983-1984.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Irene Smith, as well as three brothers and three sisters. His memory will be cherished by his surviving siblings: Almond (Randy) Smith, Chester (Chet) Smith, Mac Smith, and Emma Smith. Bobby's legacy continues through his wife, Caroline Smith, and their three children: Susan Caldwell (married to Steve Caldwell), Bobby Carl Smith Jr. (married to Tarissa Smith), and Kelly J. Olsen (married to Kelly O. Olsen). Additionally, he is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his values and memories.
