Edward L. “Opa” Ruttan, 63 of Pendleton, Oregon passed away suddenly on December 24, 2017 in Renton, Washington shortly after his acceptance to the lung transplant list.  Ed was born in Pendleton, Oregon on October 19, 1954 to Ross and June (Catterall) Ruttan. 

Ed absolutely loved his home town of Pendleton, Oregon.  After graduating from Pendleton High School in 1972, he joined the Army where he honorably served 20 years handling logistics.  He did two tours in Berlin, which was his favorite place that he served.

He married the love of his life, Ellen Rideout (or Els, My Precious) on November 30, 1996.  He loved his dogs: Dobermans from years ago; Yahtzee and Xena; and more recently smaller companions, Miss Pixie,  Miss Pickles, Missie, and Zorro.  Ed leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity.  He was an avid jokester and was always making others smile.

Ed “Opa” is survived by his precious wife, Ellen; brother, Bill Ruttan; step daughter, Staci and husband Andy Roberts; stepson, Paris White; grandchildren, Leanna Hunt-Shippentower and husband Nacheoa Shippentower, Brittanni Hunt, Justin Roberts, Chelsea and husband Jared Brown,  and Tessa Marie White; great grandchildren, Devon, Jaxxon, and Emrys Shippentower, Jocelyn and Brooklyn Smallz, and Lynley Jean Brown.

He was predeceased by his parents and grandson Daniel White.

Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton at 2:00 pm.  Inurnment will take place at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon, will take place at a later date.

Oh my goodness, Another friend gone. I'm so sorry for for everyone's loss.both his family and his friends.
Ed's humor was what always set him apart from everybody. I so wished he could have been a part of our class reunion this summer, he was missed..
I know he is in a good place now.... and there are a lot of his friends waiting to welcome him...To the ones he left behind, will be lost for a while, but... Remember his smile and his laugh it will help ease your pain. The same way he used it to ease his...

We will all miss you Ed! You were always the highlight in Vegas to visit with and share your military stories with puppies sitting all over you! I am saddened at the difficulties you endured physically. I wish I would have driven to Pendleton and seen you one more time!
