John E. Straughan

November 17, 1925-August 26, 2017

John E. Straughan a long time resident of Pendleton passed away on the morning of August 26, 2017. He was born November 17, 1925 to Orson L. and Jessie May Hannah Straughan in Pendleton, Oregon.

He graduated from Pendleton High School with a FFA Star Farmer Award.

During WWII he served his country in the navy in the Pacific.  After returning from the service he married Elma M. Campbell on February 9, 1948. Together they raised 4 children on the family farm.

John recognized the value of saving the soil. He also liked to experiment with different crops and adopted different conservation measures.  These measures were recognized when he received a Conservation Farmer of the Year Award.

John continued to help out on the family farm well into his 80’s.  To keep busy while not helping on the farm, he and Elma took trips to the coast to purchase myrtle wood for his wood working and to purchase daffodils.  They also took a trip to Scotland to research his ancestry.

John was proceeded in death by his wife Elma, his parents and his brother Larry.

John is survived; sons John R. Straughan (Joey), and Patrick C. Straughan (Kim); daughters, Christine Straughan of Kennewick; and  Rosemary Eye (Bill) of Rancho Cordova, CA; along with five grandchildren three great-grandchildren.

Grave side service will be held at Olney Cemetery on Friday September 1, 2017 at 1:00 pm

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that contribution be made to the Umatilla County Historical Society.

Pat and family, Your Dad was a very special person. I enjoyed talking with him and seeing his beautiful daffodils. He would always have a little grin when he brought in a beautiful bouquet. I felt so lucky when he would give us several of his prized bulbs. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
