Kathleen “Kathy” Rene Dowell

February 20, 1956 – July 19, 2016

Kathleen “Kathy” Rene Dowell our beloved daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin companion and friend passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2016, after a brave battle with cancer.  She was surrounded by loved ones.  Kathy was 60 years old.

Kathy was born February 20, 1956, in Nampa, Idaho, to Roscoe “Bob” and Wilma “Dorlene” Dowell.  When she was one year old the family moved to College Place, WA, for a few years and then to Walla Walla, WA, where she attended school graduating from Wa-Hi in 1974.  Soon after she started her working career at Eastgate Drug.  While living in Walla Walla she also worked at Soper’s Oil Co. and Frontier Federal Savings and Loan.

Along about this time she met her lifelong companion Jack Swenson.  Kathy then moved to Pendleton, OR, in 1985, to be with Jack and started working at US Bank.  She also worked at Coca-Cola, Hill Meat and for a few years at the Umatilla County Assessor’s office.  She had found her home when she went to work at Community Bank and remained there until illness forced her to retire in 2014.

Kathy and Jack met thru mutual friends when she was playing softball for a local Walla Walla team.  She was an awesome pitcher.  They enjoyed 4-wheeling and snowmobiling with friends in the mountains around Pendleton.  They also traveled to the Oregon coast a few times.  Kathy loved to travel and made several vacation trips with family to Hawaii, California and Missouri.  The Oregon and California coast were her two favorite places.

One of her favorite pastimes was needlework.  She cross stitched several baby quilts among other things for family and friends.  She also enjoyed watching sports, reading, gaming and dinner out with family and friends.

Kathy was preceded in death by her mother Dorlene, brother Michael and nephew Ryan.  She is survived by her: companion of thirty years Jack, father Roscoe “Bob” a World War II Veteran, sister Dianna (Barry) Ellis, niece Keely (Ryan) Hamilton, and step-great-niece Hadlei Hamilton, brother Dan (Cindy) Dowell, nephew Chris (companion Sherene) Dowell, and niece Cara (Chad) Hibbard.  She also leaves numerous extended family members and several members of Jack’s family.

At her request there will be no funeral service.  Friends may view on Friday, July 22, 2016, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton.  Disposition is by cremation.  Family and friends will honor her at a later date.  Kathy we love you and will miss you forever.  Contributions in honor of Kathy may be made to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity and may be sent in care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, PO Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801.  Sign the online condolence book at www.burnsmortuary.com.  Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is handling arrangements.

I met Kath at Community Bank about 6 1/2 yrs ago. She was one of the neatest people I have ever met! The way she was so much fun to be around and to work with. I will truly miss her.

My husband and I knew Kathy from softball days. And I had the privilege of working with her at Community Bank; she was always helpful and friendly. And we enjoyed our chances to 'catch up' on the Walla Walla happenings. She put up such a good fight. I'm so glad for her and her family that she had more time with them. But she is gone way too soon. My deepest sympathy to Jack and all her family and friends.

So sorry to hear of Kathys death. She was my best friend from high school, and we even lived together for a number of years. She also introduced me to the man I married, 35 years ago. Sorry to have loss touch with her. I think it was 20 years ago I last saw her. Have many great memories. Deepest sympathy to her family and friends.
