Sylvana Denise (Minthorn) Shippentower

August 3, 1955 – July 17, 2016

Sylvana Denise Shippentower – a lifelong Pendleton resident passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016 at her home after a long illness.  She was 60 years old. 

A Dressing Ceremony will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton.  Washat will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Agency Longhouse in Mission.  Sunrise Services will begin at 7:00 a.m. at the Longhouse with burial to follow at Agency Cemetery.  A full obituary will follow.  Sign the online condolence book at  Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. 

Sylvana was born August 3, 1955, to Sylvester Minthorn and Virginia (Williams) Minthorn, in Pendleton, Oregon.  She attended elementary and junior high in Pendleton and high school at Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon.  She was a volunteer for the Happy Canyon Night Show and Pendleton Round-Up, where her family has camped and participated since its inception.

She was an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.  She previously worked for the Ukiah and Umatilla Forest Service as a fire lookout and held various jobs with the CTUIR.  She loved her dogs, the outdoors, camping, listening to music, gardening, drawing, art, dancing, fishing, picking huckleberries and spending time with her loved ones.  She had a big spirit, a beautiful smile, loved to laugh, had a special place in her heart for all and is beloved by all who knew her.

She is survived by former spouse David Shippentower, her mate Clayton Johnson; children Sylvia Minthorn, Angela Minthorn, Castina Shippentower, and twins Jennifer and Jesse Dave; siblings Larry Minthorn, Sheldon “Pauly” Minthorn, Audwin “Odie” Minthorn, Rhonda “Nu-Nu” Minthorn, Sandra Minthorn, Virginia “Bubby” Minthorn and Rosetta Minthorn; grandchildren Carina Vasquez, Angel Pabon, Marialee Pabon, twins Luis and Alizaya Ortega, Monica Sampson, Zada Sampson, Jordan Shippentower, Ayannah Minthorn, Richie Minthorn, Preston Minthorn, and Jessalyn Minthorn; and great-granddaughter Ezmae Hoisington, as well as numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, all of Pendleton, Oregon. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Chester “Ace” Minthorn, Farren “Jinks” Minthorn, maternal grandparents McKinley and Susie Williams, paternal grandparents Wilbur and Lucy Minthorn, uncles Rudolph “Musky” Williams, Warren “Goose” Williams, Robert “Bob” Williams, and Victor “Duck” Williams, aunts Armenia Miles and Eva Lavadour, as well as several other family members from both sides of her family.
