Kenneth John Phillips

December 10, 1929 – September 1, 2015


Kenneth John Phillips – of Pendleton, died Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at St. Anthony Hospital.  He was 85 years old. 

Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 4th, 2015, at 11:00 AM at the Peace Lutheran Church in Pendleton, followed by interment with Military Funeral Honors at Weston Cemetery, Weston, Oregon.  Sign the online condolence book at  Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is handling arrangements. 

Kenneth was born December 10, 1929, at home, in Walla Walla, Washington, to John K. and Jessie O. (Noyes) Phillips.  He attended schooling through the ninth-grade at the Washington and Greenpark Schools in Walla Walla.  His family moved to Oregon when he was 17.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard for 11 years and received an Honorable Discharge in 1960.  June 29, 1951, he married Marjorie Alice Perry in Pendleton; two children were born to this union.  He later married Gloria Dickerson on August 20, 1966, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; one child was born to this union.  Kenneth was a mechanic much of his life.  He worked at Oiler & Howard, Foster’s Chevrolet and Inland Chevrolet before going into business for himself, opening Ken Phillips Auto & Truck Repair.  In 1966 he realized his lifelong dream of owning a farm.  He raised wheat near Cold Springs for 49 years until his passing.  He had a shop on his ranch and was known for his ability to fix anything.  He was a member of the Lutheran Church.  He was also a member of the Elks lodge.  His hobbies included restoring old cars, especially the interior upholstery.  He was actively involved in the demolition derby and stock car racing at the Pendleton Round-up Grounds with his brother Ross.  He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.  He always led by example and was known for giving excellent advice. 

 Ken is survived by his children: Patti Wright of Beaverton, OR, Linda (Mike) McCoy of Warren, OR, Stephenie Phillips-Wallis of Pendleton, Gordon (Julie) Phillips of Idaho Falls, ID, and Jim (Leslie) Phillips of Pendleton, brothers: Don (Lucy) Phillips of Milton-Freewater, and Gary Sundquist of Portland, sisters; Doris Chryst of Pendleton, and LaVerna Sundquist Koch of St. Helens, OR, 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, as well as 11 nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, a brother, Ross & sister-in-law Darla Phillips, a sister, Anita Sundquist, two granddaughters, Courtney Wright and Nichole Phillips, and a nephew, Mark Phillips.

We are so sorry to hear of Kenny's passing. He was a close friend and family member to us and all of the Bob Lorenzen family. We send our sincere condolences and will keep Kenny and his family in our prayers.
