Lynn Royce Jones

February 22, 1930 – December 12, 2014

Lynn Royce Jones, a resident of Pilot Rock, died Friday, December 12, 2014, at a local care facility after a long struggle with multiple health issues that began with a fall while shoveling snow last February.  He was 84 years old.

A family and close friends graveside service will be held Friday, December 19, at 11:00 at Pilot Rock Cemetery followed by a celebration of life luncheon at the Baptist Church, 585 SW Birch St. Pilot Rock, OR.  Sign the online condolence book at  Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.

Lynn was born February 22, 1930 to Cecil and Minnie (Wells) Jones on a farm  outside of Cloverdale, Kansas. He was raised on a farm outside of Moline, Kansas with two older brothers.  As a child, he attended a country school house where he and his brothers sometimes rode a horse for transportation and in the winter ice skated across a pond, and said it was uphill both ways!  As a young man, he was an avid horseman, cowboy, rode bucking bulls, learned wheat and corn farming, animal husbandry, enjoyed ice and roller skating, target shooting, and dancing.

During 1950, he had a short career with the Air Force but was honorably discharged due to an ankle injury.

One summer night of dancing at Stateline on the border of Kansas and Oklahoma, he met Barcia Cowell from Sedan, KS. He romanced her with his dancing skills and then because it was raining, he carried her across the road to his pick-up to give her a ride home!

On January 6, 1952, he married Barcia in a small church in Moline. They were known for roller dancing together! The couple resided on several different farms near Sedan, Kansas as wheat farmers, raised chickens, pigs, and cows.

The couple initially had three children in Kansas, Keith, Teresa, and Sherry.  After two years of wheat crop failures due to flooding, he decided to move his young family to Pilot Rock where a cousin offered him a job helping with his ranch.  The young family lived in town shortly followed by two farms on the Wells ranch with Lynn working as a farmer, mending fences and such. Later, Lynn transitioned to the mill and then became a logger for the remainder of his career.  As a logger, he and Barcia had two more children, Cecil and Colleen.

Lynn was active in the Oregon Log Truckers Association serving as president during his membership. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 28.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barcia, in 1998.

Lynn is survived by his brothers:  Lawrence, Denver, CO. and Rolland, Kodiak, AK.; and children: A. Keith Jones of Pilot Rock, OR, Teresa L. Jones of Pendleton, OR, Sherry Curnutt (Ray) of Pomeroy, WA, Cecil (Susan), of Pendleton, OR, and Colleen Yarbor (Mark), of Pilot Rock, Ore; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter and four nieces.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the American Cancer Society.
