Robert L. “Bob” Irving Jr.

March 23, 1930 – September 2, 2014


Robert L. “Bob” Irving Jr. – longtime Pendleton resident died Tuesday, September 2, 2014, in Pendleton.  He was 84 years old.  Graveside services will be held Monday, September 8, 2014, at 11:00 AM at Skyview Memorial Park in Pendleton.  Contributions in memory of Bob Irving may be made to the Pendleton Public Library, and may be sent directly or in care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, PO Box 489, Pendleton.  Sign the online condolence book at  Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is handling arrangements.

Bob was born March 23, 1930, to Elsie and Robert Irving in Roseburg, Oregon.  He was raised and educated in Roseburg, graduating from Roseburg High School in 1948.  He attended Oregon State University where he was a member of the OSU ROTC Pershing Rifles Regiment, and attained a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Degree.  He then enlisted in the National Guard Army Reserve where he was called up into Active Duty from 1954 to 1956, when he was Honorably Discharged from the Army.  On June 30, 1962, he married Barbara Maurine Wilson in San Francisco, CA.  The couple lived in Tacoma, WA, Eugene, OR, Milton-Freewater, OR, and Pasco, WA, before settling in Pendleton in 1971.  He had worked as a Draftsman, an Industrial Equipment Repairman, he did Combine Assembly for PGG, and ran combines in the summer months for friends. Bob was an instructor of Agriculture Mechanics at Blue Mountain Community College where he was affectionately known to students as “Uncle Bob”.  He taught at BMCC for twenty years retiring in 1991.  He was a member of the Pendleton First United Methodist Church.  He was involved with the NRA, the Pilot Rock Gun Club and the Pendleton Police Reserve.  He served on the Pendleton Library Board and was an avid reader.  He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and a private pilot. He loved fishing in Alaska and hunting with his sons and grandchildren and he loved tart lemon pie. 

Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Irving at the home in Pendleton, sons Jim Irving and Ben Irving, daughter Martha King, a brother David Bruce Irving, five grandchildren: Christopher Irving, Jonathan Irving, Elizabeth Irving, Yasmine Kot and Aiden M. Irving and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents Robert & Elsie Irving and a brother, Ben Irving.

Barbara, It is with a heavy heart that I grieve the loss of your husband, Bob. Though I did not know him, you have become precious to me, and I just wanted to let you know how sad I am for you and your family. May God hold you in His loving hands during these difficult days.

Barbara, so sorry to see that Bob has passed away, little did I know when I saw you both a few months ago going to St. Anthony for the fish dinner on a Friday night, that it would be the last time I saw you together. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. God Bless and may Bob rest in peace.

Bob was such a great person; he was an inspiration to Byron at Stangiers and myself through the Pendleton Library and Helping Hand, he will live on in your memories forever. We were so sorry to read about Bob's passing. He lived a very good and interesting life and will be missed by those who knew him. He always seemed such a happy person with a smile on his face and a good word for everyone.

Dear Barbara,

We were very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. Please know that we have been thinking of you and are wishing you well. We were happy that we had the chance to meet with you and Bob at the Irving family reunion in 2009. Please take good care.
