Rodney A. “Rod” Samp, a resident of Pendleton, died Sunday, September 16, 2012 at his home in Pendleton.  He was 59 years old.

Graveside Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, September 21, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. and will be held in the Olney Cemetery, Pendleton.  A viewing will be Thursday, September 20, 2012, between the hours of 12:00 noon and 5:00 P.M. and will be in the Burns Mortuary of Pendleton.  Contributions in his memory may be directed to the American Cancer Society, and may be sent care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O. Box 489, Pendleton, Oregon 97801.  You may sign the online condolence book at  Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. 


Mr. Samp was born February 26, 1953 in The Dalles, Oregon.  He was the son of Earnest and LaVonne (Schmidt) Samp.  As a child he moved with his family to Medford, and in 1966 the family moved to Pendleton where he was raised and educated.  He graduated from Pendleton High School with the class of 1972.  He married Marlis Bromell on September 7, 1974 in Pendleton.  He and his wife had recently celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary.  He had worked for Goad Ranches, Lamb Weston and Woodpecker Truck before he started working for Cunningham Sheep Company.  He greatly enjoyed working for Cunningham Sheep, and Cunningham considered him a valuable and hardworking employee.  He had worked for Cunningham Sheep for 35 years, and recently retired due to health reasons. 

He enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle, working on small engines, and his work with Cunningham Sheep. 

He is survived by his wife, Marlis of Pendleton, his mother, LaVonne Samp of Pendleton, three brothers: Darwin D. Samp of Pendleton, Jerry W. Samp of Oregon City, Oregon, and Michael Samp of Damascus, Oregon.  He was preceded in death by his father.

Mike and Nancy,
