William H. "Bill" Scharn Jr. – a resident of Pendleton passed away on Monday, May 31, 2010 at Willowbrook Terrace at the age of 85. A Graveside Inurnment service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, at Skyview Memorial Park in Pendleton. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the V.F.W. Let'Er Buck Post 922 or to the Salvation Army. Bill was born on March 19, 1925 in Pendleton to Louise Schultz and William H. Scharn, Sr.. He attended St. Joseph's Academy. He Graduated from Gonzaga High School in Spokane, WA in 1942. He then entered Gonzaga University and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was at Gonzaga University and University of Washington under the Navy V-1 and V-12 officer's training program. He then served in the Navy in the New Guinea and Philippine campaign in the South Pacific where he received the Purple Heart. After the war he returned to college and attended Eastern Oregon State College and the University of Oregon. In November of 1945 he married Wilma I. Watson and raised two sons: Anthony W. Scharn and Timothy J. Scharn. The couple divorced in 1977. He married Victoria Dick in 1989. Mr. Scharn was in the insurance, real estate and appraisal business from 1949 until 1997 when he retired his Appraisal Certification, but retained his Insurance Agents License and his Real Estate Brokers License. He held the oldest Oregon Real Estate License in the state, starting in January of 1950 until the day he passed away, 60 years. He also taught real estate appraisal at Blue Mountain Community College as a pre license requirement. He had been a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church for many years. He was a past member of the V.F.W. Let'Er Buck Post 922, 40 & 8, American Legion, as well as a Life member of the Appraisal Institute and Elks BPOE #288. He was a longtime member of the Pendleton Country Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and most all sports. He played semi-pro fast pitch softball in the Eugene and Eastern Oregon areas as a pitcher. He and his wife loved to golf and for many years had spent time in Palm Springs to enjoy the weather and the sport. He was single digit handicap player until the onset of war related health issues. He will be remembered by many friends and family for his wonderful sense of humor and ability to tell jokes and make people laugh, which he was doing into the last few days of his life. He is survived by his wife Vicki, sons Anthony and Timothy, sisters Betty McLaughlin of Bend, OR, Margery Capiello, Pat Monagle of Pendleton and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Donald Scharn.
