Genevieve M. McCracken, a longtime resident of Pendleton and former resident of Athena, died Thursday, November 19, 2009 in the St. Anthony Hospital. She was 83 years old. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. in the Burns Mortuary Chapel, Pendleton, Oregon. Burial will follow in the Athena Cemetery, Athena, Oregon. Memorials in her memory may be directed to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and may be sent care of the Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O. Box 489, Pendleton, Oregon 97801. Send condolences to the family or sign the guest book at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. McCracken was born December 15, 1925 in Brashear, Missouri. She was the daughter of Reed and Ella Ross Black. She was raised and educated in Missouri and Colorado. After her schooling she married Charles Junior McCracken on November 8, 1943 in Ft. Collins. The couple lived in the Ft. Collins, Colorado area until moving to Athena in the early 1950s. While in Athena she worked at raising her family. In the early 1970s she moved into Pendleton where she began working as a cook in the Pendleton Community Hospital. She continued to work at the hospital until her retirement in the mid 1980s. She greatly enjoyed embroidery, working word search puzzles, cooking and spending time with her family. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Pendleton and had been a past member of the Rebecca Lodge and the Odd Fellows. She is survived by five children, Sharon Picard of Pendleton, OR, Reed McCracken of Pendleton, OR, Ronna McCracken of Pendleton, OR, Ronald "Ronnie" McCracken of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Eleanor McCracken of Pendleton, OR; three sisters, Wavalee Faircloth of Pendleton, OR, Ina Spencer of Pendleton, OR, and Wanda Jones of Heppner, OR; two brothers, James and Charles Black both of Pilot Rock, OR; seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three children, five sisters, and three brothers.
