Carl M. Duchek was born November 11, 1921, in Atwater, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Frank & Eva “Wastradowski” Duchek.  He married Rose-Mary Manz, April 11, 1942, in Vancouver, WA, at St. James Cathedral.  They graduated from Fort Vancouver High School in 1939.  Carl was Honorably Discharged from the Seabees in September of 1945.  They moved from Vancouver to Pendleton in 1946.

Carl and Rose-Mary followed her parents to Pendleton and opened the Pendleton Baking Company.  Carl worked in the Bread Industry throughout his career, working also for Holsum, Sweet Heart and Snyders Bread Companies.  During that time his family grew to seven children with two daughters and five sons.

Carl’s activities kept him busy with St. Mary’s Church, The Knights of Columbus, The Elks Lodge and the VFW.  Carl and Rose-Mary raised the flag at high school football games and other sporting events for over twenty years.  Carl’s life revolved around his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities, including a trip to Australia for a high school football All Star game.

Carl was always busy with civic activities through his life, volunteering nonstop for such organizations as Happy Canyon, the Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall Of Fame, the State 2A Basketball Tournament, V.F.W. and the Elks Lodge.

His favorite hobby was making spinners and whirligigs out of bicycle wheels and broken fan blades.  His other favorite pastime was sitting on his front porch watching the world pass by.

Carl is survived by: his daughters Gayle Knight (Joel), and Zoe Duchek (Patti), sons Dennis (Julie), Matt (Pat), Greg (Roxanne), and Wes, and Ron & Terri Hahn,  sisters Dorothy Green of Beaverton, OR, and Loretta Hitchcock of Issaquah, WA, thirteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rose-Mary, son Rodney, granddaughter Kendra Fritzler and three sisters.
