Mary Jane Allred – a resident of Kennewick, WA, and former resident of Pendleton, OR, died on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at a Kennewick Care Facility. She was 89 years old. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton. A gathering will follow the funeral, at the Vert Club Room. Private burial will be held on Monday, May 9, 2011, at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton. Contributions in memory of Mary J. Allred may be made to the Umatilla County Historical Society, and sent directly, or in care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, PO Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801. Sign the online guestbook at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements. Mary was born on January 20, 1922 in Ratliff, Mississippi, to Huey L. and Birta Mobley Hester. She was raised and educated in Guntown, MS. In high school she was a star on the girl's basketball team, and was elected team captain her senior year. She graduated from Guntown High School with the class of 1939. Following her graduation, Mary moved to Tupelo, Mississippi, where she met and fell in love with R.C. Allred. They were married on June 1, 1948, in Tupelo, where they started their family. She had four children. In 1956, the family moved to Pendleton, Oregon. Mary was a homemaker who dedicated herself to raising their children. In 1969, when the children were grown, she began working at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton as a Diet clerk. In 1981 her husband, R.C. Allred passed away. Following her retirement in 1983, Mary spent much of her time with her family. She loved to travel and often visited her relatives and friends. In 2001, she moved to Kennewick, Washington. Mary was a sports nut, and enjoyed watching any and all sports: baseball, basketball, football, even Ice Capades and Figure Skating. After she moved to Kennewick, her favorite sport became Ice Hockey. She loved to go to the Tri-City American's games, and did so often. She liked to talk hockey with the players, and collected all kinds of memorabilia such as player autographed hockey sticks and jerseys. She was most passionate about spending time with her family. Her hobbies included reading, traveling, and listening to music. She was an avid gardener, and was great with all kinds of flowers. Mary Jane Allred is survived by her children: Jack Hester and wife Sharon of Ephrata, WA, Ronnie Allred and wife Ann of Weston, OR, Mary Dickinson and husband Bill of Kennewick, WA, and Nawassa Rinehart and husband Mark of Kennewick, WA, two sisters: Joyce Shelton of Fort DeFuniak Springs, FL, and Irene Bristow of Tupelo, MS, also surviving her are: 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and her husband.
