Ralph grew up in Steger, Illinois, along with his brother and six sisters. He attended high school at DePaul Academy in Chicago and graduated in 1939 with excellent grades. Working in the CCC's for 18 months, he traveled around the West and fell in love with the mountains, trees, rivers and lakes in Utah, Idaho, Montana and Colorado. He volunteered to teach other young men in the CCC's reading and writing skills because many had not had his educational opportunities. He also worked as a chemist for an assay company before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served four years in the Pacific during World War II, with his last position being a gunner's mate first class. After the War, he returned to the West where he traveled with friends and worked odd jobs. He took a ranch hand position in Colorado for some years before moving to Wisdom, Montana, where he met his wife Yvonne NaiDean Denny. The couple was married on September 3, 1952 in Dillon, Montana, and started his family in Wisdom. In Montana, he moved his family to Big Sandy, then to Choteau, before going overseas alone to South Vietnam for work four years in construction during the Vietnam War. The family moved west to DuBois, Idaho, then to Clackamas, Oregon, and finally to Adams, Oregon, where they remained. Ralph had resided there for over thirty years. He often told his children and friends how much he had enjoyed his life, and spoke about his love of his life's work as a mechanic. He missed very few days due to illness, and was proud of his ability to continue working full-time until he reached the age of 76, when he retired to care for his wife, which he did until her death in 1998. Shortte is survived by six of his seven children: Constance Enzweiler, Carrie Dave Bremer, David Margaret Enzweiler, Donna Skaggs, Denise Byron Coffelt, and Michael Deanna Enzweiler, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren as well as many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife NaiDean, daughter Gail Ann and granddaughter Yvonne Weed.
