Earl Lawrence Chapman of Pilot Rock died Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at his home.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at 1:00 pm in Olney Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 11:00 pm to 4:00 pm. 

Earl was born June 15, 1925 in Spokane, Washington to Lawrence Chapman and Besie (Anderson) Chapman. He lived in Spokane, North Dakota, Tri-Cities, Oklahoma, and Pilot Rock. He was married to Bea Chapman for 61 years.

He joined the Navy when he was 17 during WWII. He served on the Soloman Islands and Saipan Islands. After the war he was a fireman at Hanford. He did farm work and was a Millwright at Fiberboard Mill. He was a janitor for the Pilot Rock School District.

He was the Lion of the year for years 1987, 1989, 1992, and 2000. He received the Lion’s President Award in 1988. He received the Lion’s Outstanding Service Award in 1994. He received Pilot Rock’s First Citizen Award in 1989. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his brother Dale Chapman of Pilot Rock, one grandson, Kelly Quinn of Pendleton, and two nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Bea, daughter Earlene Decker and son Robert Chapman.

Praying for your comfort and peace at this time of sadness. I roofed a house one time with Earl. He helped more people in Pilot Rock, always with a smile on his face, than we will ever know. He was always so gentle and kind to Bea as well. I can't think of a better man. Rest in Peace Earl. Thank you for all you have done over the years.

Though I didn't know him well my daughter Caitland is his great granddaughter. He surly will be missed by her. She loves Bea and Earl very much.

I just wanted to send my condolences to the Chapman family. I still have the hammer he gave me in 1986. He will be missed.

I knew Earl when we worked for Pilot Rock School district. He was always willing to lend a hand and help. He was a very friendly and kind man. We will miss him.

We are sad to hear of Earls passing, comforted he can meet up with Bea, Earlene and Earl.
