Veva E. Bill

April 19, 1931 – July 13, 2016

Veva E. Bill – a Pendleton resident passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at a Pendleton care facility.  She was 85 years old. 

A Dressing Ceremony will be held Friday, July 15, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Burns Mortuary of Pendleton Chapel with a Recitation of the Rosary to be held at 7:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 16, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church followed by burial at Agency Cemetery.  Sign the online condolence book at www.burnsmortuary.com.  Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.

Veva was born April 19, 1931, to Phillip Bill Sr. and Eliza (Cowapoo) Bill in Pendleton, Oregon.  She attended St. Andrew’s School, Helen McCune Junior High School and John Murray Senior High School in Pendleton.  She was an active volunteer with the Happy Canyon and Round-up all her life and camped at the Indian Village every year.  In 1949 she took the role of Sacajawea in the Happy Canyon night pageant.  The role is still in the family today.  She remained an active participant in the Happy Canyon until her death.  She was the 1999 Happy Canyon Hall of Fame recipient.

In 1954 she was married to Mel Sands in Oakland, California, and had a baby girl who passed away a year and a half later.  This marriage ended in divorce.  She was married and had her first son, Phillip Jackson, on March 20, 1956.  They later divorced. 

She worked for the first Law & Order Commission and the Tribal Enrollment Commission in the 60’s to 70’s.  She then worked for Kerns Furniture Factory in Pilot Rock.  In the early 80’s she worked as an alcohol and drug counselor.  Then during the 80’s to early 90’s she was employed by Smith Frozen Foods. 

She is survived by her son Phillip Jackson and brother, Raphael Bill and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, brothers, Ivan Bill, Henry Bill and baby Reginald, and sisters, Bernadette Bill Nez, Donna Bill Chen and Phyllis Bill.
