Marvella Marie Jones

March 31, 1938 – October 8, 2015

 

Marvella Marie (Henry) Jones entered into rest on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at her home in Pendleton, Oregon. 

She was born March 31, 1938 to Albert (Wildcat) and Frances (Pinchy) Henry in Sweetwater, Idaho.  Marvella attended schools in Lapwai and graduated from Lapwai High School in 1957.  She later went to Beauty School and worked as a Beautician for a few years in Salem, Oregon.  She lived in Oregon, Washington, California, Utah and Montana before returning to the Lapwai area.   She married Henry Penney and they later divorced.  She married Jesse Jones and they later divorced.  She worked at Potlatch Corporation for many years on both the wood and tissue side later retiring due to her health.  She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, picking huckleberries and digging roots, she was active in sports bowling, basketball, softball, tap dancing and was well known for her beadwork.    She made her home on the Umatilla reservation where she participated for many years in the Happy Canyon show with her son during the Pendleton Roundup.   She was a member of the Umatilla Elder’s Circle and enjoyed traveling with her dear friends and sisters to participate in the many Elder’s Day activities on different reservations throughout the Pacific Northwest. 

She is survived by her sons, Gabriel Jonathon Hawk Jones of Pendleton, OR, Albert (Deanne) Penney of Kamiah, her daughter, Debbie Henry (Cyrus Squeochs, Jr) of Lapwai.    Her brothers, Dale Henry, Melvin Henry, Alan Henry all of Lapwai, her sisters, Alice McCurdy, Lou Jean Benjamin, Mardell Henry and Frances (The Rock) Henry all of Lapwai and Gail (Wayne) Patterson of Kettle Falls, WA.  She is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great granddaughters, many first cousins who loved her as a sister and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Frances Henry, her grandparents George and Aleeswalla Fletcher, William and Pearl Taylor, her brothers Ronald Henry, LeeRoy Henry, Arnold (Muggs) Henry, and a sister, Betty Lou Henry. 

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Monday, October, 12, 2015 at the Burns Mortuary in Pendleton, OR.  The funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at the Lapwai Church of God, with burial and dinner to follow.  Sign the online condolence book at www.burnsmortuary.com  Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is handling arrangements.

I will miss seeing her among the crowd at all functions especially at the Long house. She will be missed, I apologize for not being there w/ you Gabe but know my love, prayers, and hugs are. She was proud of you Gabe and the love she had for you will help you in the days ahead, believe w/ your whole heart as the Creator is w/ you and will take care of you. Take care and God Bless.
