Benjamin (Bengie) C. Winburn Jr., 65 of Pendleton, Ore., passed away Monday, June 30, 2014, while on vacation with his wife Shirley in Idaho. 

Ben was born in Seattle, Wash., on April 21, 1949, to Benjamin C. Winburn Sr. and Theresa Louise (nee Koran). He graduated from Great Falls High School in Great Falls, Mont., in 1969. He came to Pendleton while working for Buttrey’s Foods and retired from Hill Meat Co. in Pendleton after 30 years in 2007.

Ben was an outstanding athlete and had a baseball scholarship to Arizona State University. In his adult life, he enjoyed baseball, bowling and golf. Ben is one of the few people to ever score a hole-in-one on a par 4, called an albatross.

He is survived by his current wife Shirley; his son Nick Winburn of Pendleton; previous wife Linda of Idaho; granddaughters Kimberly and Kassandra Nordquist of Idaho, Holly Winburn of Pendleton and Layla Winburn of Pendleton; and daughter-in-law Jessica of Pendleton. He is also survived by his brothers Paul Swortz and Leo Winburn and his sister Woogena Gales, along with many nieces and nephews.

Ben was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin C. Winburn Sr. and mother Theresa Claybourne, a baby sister who died at birth in 1955 and sisters Catherine Gales and Florence Brown, along with his beautiful daughter Tara Kay Gainey and a loving son, BJ Winburn.

A viewing will be held at Burns Mortuary Thursday, July 10 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pendleton. A reception, a celebration of Ben’s life, will follow at Wildhorse Resort.
