Alberta Jean (Newman) Stone

Jan. 4, 1930 – Jan. 10, 2014

Alberta Jean (Newman) Stone – a Pendleton resident passed away Friday morning, January 10, 2014, at a Pendleton care facility at the age of 84.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at 10:00 AM at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Pendleton Eagles Lodge.  Interment will be at the North Powder Cemetery in North Powder, Oregon.

Alberta Jean Newman was born January 4, 1930, to James and Lena Newman in North Powder, Oregon, where she was raised and educated.  She then attended Eastern Oregon College in La Grande, Oregon.  In March of 1948 she married Robert W. Tally.   He preceded her in death.  She then married Kenneth G. Stone and moved to Pendleton, where she remained.  She had worked at The Hut Restaurant & Lounge, Buttreys Grocery and Safeway.  She was a member of the Pendleton Eagles Auxiliary #28 for over forty years.  She was fiercely independent and survived breast cancer, driving herself to all treatments and appointments.

Jeannie loved music, she could play any instrument by ear and loved to sing.  She was especially gifted with the piano and guitar, she loved to pick with friends.  She traveled around the northwest to listen to Kerry Christiansen, master yodeler.  She loved traveling, especially to the beach. She and her siblings traveled annually.  They adventured to several states and even took an Alaskan Cruise.  Alberta was also a collector: musical instruments, salt wells, thimbles, cups, jewelry, miniature shoes and wolves were among her various treasures. She was never seen anywhere without her hair being done.  Spending time with family was most important to her, she had a very giving and loving heart.  She adored attending her great-granddaughter Sydney’s sporting events.

Jeannie is survived by her daughters: Donna Tally Montee (Jeff) of Portland, OR, Diana Tally Payant of Pendleton, OR, and Jeannie Kaye Stone Greninger (Mint) of Mesa, AZ, brothers, James Edgar Newman (Elsie), and Kerry EldridNewman (Marie), sister, Marda Gayle Bloom (Ron), grandchildren: Kelly Montee Conrad (Cooper), Kevin Montee (Tina), Chad R. Payant, Dail Rae Gee (Max), Samantha Gionet (Sean), Mint Greninger Jr. (Krystall), and Denise Silverman Sheynin (Eli), great-grandchildren: Kathryn, Cooper Jr., Amanda (Brett), Jessica Zipf, Sydney, Justin, Allen, Malcom, Kyla, Ziggy, Morry and Jay, and great-great-grandchildren: Devin, Brylee and Jalee Greninger, as well as many friends.
