For the next two years Varene did bookkeeping out of her home.  In 1969 she went to work for Robert W Collins, Attorney at Law.  She continued with the firm of Collins and Collins as a Legal Assistant specializing in Probate work until her retirement in 2005.

On November 3rd, 1950 Varene married Joe McLaughlin in Pendleton. Although family and work were her priorities, Varene’s whole hearted support of Joe allowed him to be involved in multiple government and civic activities. Joe and Varene enjoyed entertaining friends and family, always with a fun and inviting atmosphere. She had an amazing gift through her words, deeds, and the way she truly listened. She made family, friends, and even casual acquaintances feel important and special.

Varene was an avid sports fan and supported the activities and athletic endeavors of her children and grandchildren.  She loved watching all kinds of sports and later in life took up golf.  Varene was a season ticket holder for the Portland Power and later the Portland Trailblazers.  She loved playing cards, reading, traveling and going to all kinds of live theatre.

Survivors include her children Greg and Julia McLaughlin, Patricia and Steve Malcom, all of Pendleton, Doug and Becky McLaughlin of Snoqualmie, WA and Tara and Dan Fleshman of Little Rock, AR.  Grandchildren include Alyssa and Jean Luke Alexander, Casey McLaughlin, Shannon and Chris Peters, Kim Malcom, Kevin McLaughlin, Kylie McLaughlin and Meghan McLaughlin.  Great grandchildren Murray and Keaton Alexander and Brody Peters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, her parents, R.L. and Lucille (Burnside) Colvard,  and her brother Bill Colvard.

Dear McLaughlins, I am sorry for your loss. Varene was an amazing woman, one of those greatest generation members who accomplished a lot during her time here. She had a productive and meaningful life--I hope we are all able to say the same when we reach the age of 87. She will be missed. Godspeed.
