Marie was born July 28, 1929, on Grahams Island, delivered by her grandmother, a midwife, on the Spirit Lake Sioux Reservation.  Marie was an enrolled member of the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska.  Born to John Leonard St. Arnaud and Agnes (LaCroix); she was the eldest of eight children.

At the age of five, Marie entered St. Michael’s Indian Boarding School.  She completed her education at Marty South Dakota Boarding School, where she graduated from High School.  Marie had fond memories of her life in boarding school as well as the nuns who took care of her, and shared these with her family.

Marie married Raymond E. Welch, Jr. at the age of eighteen, November 28, 1947, at Fort Totten, North Dakota.  In 1955 they moved to Eureka, Montana, with five children and two young brothers-in-law.  In 1961 they moved with six children to Kalispell, Montana, residing there for several years, completing their family with the birth of twins.

In 1971 Marie moved to Walla Walla, Washington, after a divorce.  Until then Marie was a homemaker; she had entered a new phase of her life.  As a single parent of four she entered two-year Community College.  She entered into clerical work with the Social Security Department and various agencies.  After several moves Marie went to Santee, Nebraska, to live by her elderly parents.  After her youngest children graduated from High School, Marie moved to Pendleton, Oregon.  Marie moved briefly back to Minnewaukan, North Dakota, where she lost her youngest son. She then returned to Pendleton to be near the rest of her family and worked at the Forest Service.  She lived on the Umatilla Indian Reservation almost twenty-five years.  Marie had a passion for singing in church choir since her youth.  She worked on quilts all by hand doing embroidery and crochet work.  She loved to travel to see her relatives in Minnesota and Florida.

Marie is survived by her brothers: John (& Linda) St. Arnaud of Biloxi, MS, Clare St. Arnaud of Albion, CA, Ray “Ramie” (and Carol) St. Arnaud of St. Paul, MN, sisters: Carol (& Rollie) Berglund of Alexandria, MN, Mona Patzer of Cass Lake, MN, Norma (& Bob) Gross of Deer River, MN, her sons: Larry (& Kaye) Welch of Inchelium, WA, Jerry (& Lynn) Welch of Imbler, OR, Gary (& Esther) Welch of Mission, OR, her daughters: Joyce Welch of Mission, OR, Cheryle Broncheau of Cayuse, OR, Rae Anne Jones of Mission, OR, and Brenda (& Bennie) Herrera of Mission, OR, nineteen grandchildren, fifty-five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  Marie was preceded in death by: her parents, brother LaVern “Buzz” St. Arnaud, her youngest son Brent Welch, eldest grandson Jason Broncheau and a great-grandson Teshone Jones.

I will miss your smile and that great laugh. I love you my friend. I will remember all the little things you did for me and my family. I will miss trading your cinnamon rolls for coffee and lots of laughter. Every day was a better day when we got to have our visits. I remember bringing you pies after I moved just so we could visit. I just know that God will take special care of you and you will take care of all our loved ones that passed before you. Heaven will be an even greater place once you take over. I love you, Julie Clark and family
