Virginia M. Sweet

July 26, 1924 – April 5, 2013

 

Virginia M. Sweet - a resident of Pendleton died peacefully, Friday, April 5, 2013 at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton, at the tender age of 88.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. in the Burns Mortuary of Pendleton Chapel.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Pendleton Senior Center, and may be sent care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O. Born Virginia Marian Atkins on July 26, 1924, in Portland, Oregon, she was the daughter of Harold and Ruth Ida (Ball) Atkins.  She was raised in Portland and attended schools there.  In 1965 she moved to La Grande, Oregon, where she met and married Walter Sweet.  The couple enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling.  Virginia also belonged to the Umbrella Girls, a group that preformed at special events and the Senior Center.  She later moved to Pendleton where she became active with the Senior Center until her health slowed her down.  She resided at Sun Ridge Retirement Community the last six months of her life. 

She is survived by her children: Karen Falk and son-in-law Art of Pilot Rock, Oregon, Patricia Woodburn and son-in-law Robert of Umatilla, Oregon, George Thompson and companion Karen of Pendleton, Oregon,  nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and sometimes bed partner Otis the dog.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter Sweet and two sisters Lucy and Ruth.
