Mary Elizabeth (Aas) (VanBlokland) VanWinkle passed away Monday, December 10, 2012, at Elizabethan Manor in Pendleton.  She was 91 years old.

Mary was born June 18, 1921, in Northome, Minnesota, to Mary and Otto Aas.  When she was four years old her parents moved to Cove, OR, and she was raised by her grandparents in Northome until she was 14 years old.  At that time she traveled by herself by train to La Grande, OR, to be with her family.

She graduated from Cove High School in 1940.  Mary was attending nursing school at the La Grande hospital when she met her future husband while he was a patient.  She married Wilbur VanBlokland November 7, 1943.  They had two boys, Gary and Dale. 

During their early marriage they lived in: Hereford, OR, Payette, ID, Ontario, OR, Condon, OR, and finally settled in Heppner, OR.  Mary went to work at the Heppner Hospital and then worked for Dr. Tibbles as his office nurse for several years.

She owned a variety store in Heppner for a few years and then went to work at Alma’s Apparel.  She then worked at Sears and Peterson’s Jewelry until she retired.

Wilbur passed away in 1979.  In 1981 she married Jack VanWinkle and they moved to Wickenburg, AZ, before settling down in Sun City West where Jack passed away in 2002.

In 2003 Mary moved to Weston, OR, to be closer to her family.  Her hobbies over the years included entertaining, baking – especially wedding cakes, cooking, flower arranging and painting. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Oscar Aas, Otilla “Tillie” DeBorde, Jennie Smith and Margaret Farrington, and husbands Wilbur VanBlokland and Jack VanWinkle.

Mary is survived by her sons Gary & Linda VanBlokland of Weston, OR, and Dale & Cheryl VanBlokland of Austin, TX, stepchildren: John & Sue VanWinkle of Henderson, NV, Jim & Georgia VanWinkle of Fossil, OR, Shirley & Kit George of Heppner, OR, and Trish & Ted Toll of Boardman, OR.  She had 7 Grandchildren, 5 Great-Grandchildren, 7 Step-Grandchildren and 12 Step-Great-Grandchildren

Dear Gary, Dale and families

I was sorry to hear of Mary's passing. I am sure she is at peace now.

She was such a joy! It was always a pleasure to have her at family gatherings. I will always remember her cute stories and her laughter with her sisters.
