William Robert "Bob" Hamby – a longtime resident of Pendleton died Wednesday, October 19th, at his home, surrounded by his wife, seven children, their spouses and several grandchildren, from lung cancer. He was 87 years old. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, October 24, 2011, at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Pendleton, followed by interment at Skyview Memorial Park. Mr. Hamby was born on June 19, 1924 in Morgan County, Tennessee to Elbert Taylor and Mary Belle Hamby. He attended school in Tennessee. In 1941 he joined the Three C's in April 1943 he joined the US Navy, where he served on the USS Abbot, a fletcher class destroyer as a gunner, where he participated in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaigns. He was discharged from the Navy in November of 1945, when he returned home to Tennessee for about 1 year, before coming to Eastern Oregon to try logging. He settled in Baker City, where he met and married Christine Inez Samuelsen in 1947. He was a police officer and then sold cars in Baker City. They moved to Pendleton in 1953, he sold cars until he retired in 2008, from 1982 to 1990 he owned and operated The Fixit Shop. Mr. Hamby enjoyed hunting, fishing, coaching his children, watching his kids' and grandkids' sporting events and traveling. Survivors include his wife Christine of 64 years, sons: Terry Hamby of Pilot Rock, Bill and Glenn Hamby of Pendleton, daughters Diana Hammon and Debbie Rasmussen of Pendleton, Bonnie Kik of Hermiston, and Tana Hamby of Oregon City, 27 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, brothers: Bill and Ulyous Hamby and sisters: Mattie Mason, Hattie Hamby, Virgie Honeycutt, Mabel Griffith and Della Coley, all of Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert, Ray, Tim and Lonus Hamby.
