Loretta "Lucille" Straughan – a Pendleton resident, died Thursday morning, April 7, 2011, at a local care facility. She was 85 years old. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Pendleton, followed by interment at Olney Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Lucille Straughan may be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund, or to the Umatilla County Historical Society, and may be sent care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, PO Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801. Lucille was born on October 10, 1925 in Twin Falls, Idaho, to O.D. and Zelma De Peatt Harris. She attended: 1st through 3rd grade at Fernwood School and Sunnyside School in Portland, Oregon. Then she attended Schools in Hood River, OR, from 4th to 6th grade and The Dalles, OR, from 7th to 10th grade. Her family then moved to Pendleton, OR, where she attended Pendleton High School for her Junior and Senior years, and graduated in 1943. She attended Oregon State University from 1944 to 1946. Lucille had lived in many communities including: Twin Falls, ID, Everett, WA, Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, Hood River, OR, The Dalles, OR, and Pendleton, OR. On December 8, 1946 she married Orson L. "Larry" Straughan, Jr., at the First Christian Church in Pendleton. The couple had three children: James, Marilyn and Nancy Straughan. Their daughter Nancy died at the age of 12 of Lymphocytic Leukemia. Lucille had been a homemaker for most of her life, caring for her family and household. She also did the bookkeeping for the family wheat ranch. Her husband Larry preceded her in death in 1991. She had been an active member in the First Christian Church of Pendleton, having been an Elder at one time. She was active in the State Christian Women's Fellowship, where she had been a moderator as well as president. She had volunteered her time at the Pendleton Chamber of Commerce since 1991. Her hobbies included gardening, knitting, playing card games and traveling. She also was skilled musician, and played the organ. Her greatest joy was spending time with family; her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Straughan is survived by: her son James David Straughan, his wife Debbie, daughter Marilyn Patricia Straughan Olsen, her husband John, and her sister Mrs. Darlene Jones, all of Pendleton, OR, her grandchildren: Schabahn Marie Straughan Day of Mill Creek, WA, Benjamin James Straughan of Coburg, OR, Maya Jo Straughan of Pendleton, OR, Kelly Michael Olsen of Pendleton, OR, Paul Joseph Olsen of Seattle, WA, and great-grandchildren: Braeden James Day, Jonah Henry Day, Kamden James Straughan, Kinley Jo McAnally, Drew James McAnally, Rylea Nicole Olsen, Makenzie Taylor Olsen, Kaelyn Patricia Olsen, Jackson Machado, and Lena Blue Olsen. She was preceded in death by her husband Larry Straughan and their daughter Nancy Jolyn Straughan, as well as her parents, and brother Errol D. Harris.
